Hey Tim... So being a young player over in the midst of it all in Vegas, I was just curious on some of your personal thoughts...

1. Do you now want to pack up and move to Vegas and grind it out and live the dream? :D

2. Has seeing the whole poker fraternity up close and personal given you more inspiration to further yourself in poker or has it made you realise there is more to life than poker?

3. What are some things you have learnt while you are over there?

I'm just interested to hear a young player's perspective that perhaps has goals and aspirations similar to mine, which might not have gone to plan as yet.

Amolodora, I’m intrigued that you would want to seek my thoughts on an issue that a lot of people that post on PokerNetwork could also comment on, but I’m happy to help out a fellow young poker player.

Do you now want to pack up and move to Vegas and grind it out and live the dream?

I think every poker player’s dream is to head to Las Vegas with a bankroll, grind it out for a while, get lucky and hit it big in a tournament and then travel the circuit with the likes of Erik Lindgren, Daniel Negreanu and Barry Greenstein and then live the life of a poker player.

However it isn’t as easy as it may sound. Of course I want to pack up and move out here, hell, I love Vegas and ain’t afraid to admit it. The aussie guys that I’m out here with are starting to get homesick and have nearly had enough of the circus that is the WSOP – but not me. I could live out here with ease, but I’m not going to just pack and leave without anything there for me, hoping that I can grind the cash games and tourney and become as successful as so many of our idols have.

I’ve grinded for a couple of years down in the Las Vegas room at Crown, and currently am sick of that grind. Working over here for PokerNews has allowed me to experience everything that is the WSOP, without having the pressure of having to make money every time I sit on a table to put food on the table. I spend my time mixing it with the pros (when I can), hanging out with the boys from Crown, sharing some drinks and poker, but knowing that even if I do lose a couple of hundred on the $4-8 Omaha hi-lo game I know that it isn’t the end of the world as I have a paycheck on the way.

Currently I’m chatting to some key people on how I can go about the next step of ‘graduating’ from just being a PokerNews reporter/blogger to something more permanent and rewarding.

Has seeing the whole poker fraternity up close and personal given you more inspiration to further yourself in poker or has it made you realise there is more to life than poker?

I think there is two sides to that question. I have seen all the highs of being a poker player while here, the money, the fame, the money, the bracelets, the sponsorship endorsements and the admiration from fellow pros, players and fans from around the world. However I have also seen the downsides, the debt players are in, the dodgy deals players have to make to get through, the addictions and the downward spirals.

Personally I love poker and always will. Yes I would love to play the circuit, play every event and be sponsored but that doesn’t just get handed to you. I know that there are heaps of steps before you have any chance of being the next Joe Hachem, but it all depends on how you go about getting there. If you want to sit at a table everyday for the rest of your life then go ahead, but if you want to try and enjoy your life – your family, your friends etc – then go about it that way.

Like I said in my previous answer, currently I’m working on trying to get into the poker industry without having to grind it out in a cash game or a tournament. One day my chance will come when I get a good result, followed by another result, followed by another result, and then maybe, just maybe I will be playing the circuit and be able to take a step back. Otherwise working in this industry can be just as rewarding and beneficial as it would be if you were playing.

What are some thing you have learnt while you are over there?

Poker wise I haven’t learnt much. I’ve had the chance to study some of my poker idols and current up and comers – and learn how the conduct themselves on the table and away from the table. Having conversions away from the table with the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein and Victor Ramdin has lead me to respect these guys for more then their game, but for there demeanour, approachability and the basic fact that they are the same as you and me – a friendly bloke that loves to play cards.

I have learnt that when provided with an opportunity you should try to make the most of it, because who knows when you’ll get this opportunity again. Enjoy your time because who knows when you’ll be back.

The one thing poker related I can take out of my trip so far is stick to your strengths. For me it means playing some low-limit cash games and higher buy-in tourneys because that is where I have been having success – play to your edge; its that simple. It also makes it a whole lot easier to stick to your strengths if you stay as far away as possible from your weaknesses; limit Omaha hi-lo and table games for myself.

I could probably say with some confidence that we would have some of the same goals and aspirations, and with that this is what I have to say. Have the confidence to chase your goals and aspirations whether it be poker related or not. However you must choose the right path in reaching these goals and aspirations; if it means making some detours along the way then so be it – who knows they may be for the best and consequently re-align your goals.

Re-assess, re-assess and re-assess is something I do constantly. I have an idea of where I want to be in 1 month, 6 months and even 2 years, but that’s always changing along with my environment and situation. Looking back to when I was at school I wanted to be an architect, then it changed to an accountant. While at uni I wanted to get involved in HR, but by the time I graduated in early 2007 with a potential job lined up at Coles Myer following my completion of a Bachelor in Commerce degree with majors in both HR and Accounting I didn’t want anything to do with that industry. All I wanted to do was play poker, and now a year or so later, I really want to get involved in poker without grinding it out on the felt day in day out.

So all I can say is think ahead, work hard at your current aspirations, and don’t be afraid to give something a crack. Amolodora, feel free to ask anything else that you want, always here to help.

Tim..

Great post I am seriously considering moving to vegas to play live cash full time so this post was really good read for me

I've been playing 2/3 at crown since december last year and have been probably one of the bigest winners. I have played 2/5 but the game isnt as beatable because players dont care about the money and will suckout on you too often.

I plan to go to vegas for 2months from November onwards and grind live 2/3 (maybe higher if i am feeling the cards).

I'm also planning on getting some sponsorship so I can play some big buy-in tournaments. I have had really good results in tourneys cashing 5/6 times in the last few months so I might give the tourney 'scene' a go too.

Tim whats the best way to go about sponsorship?

PokaProdigy,

I'll elaborate a bit further in relation to Pauly's response.

1. Either you are a troll that is just hoping that somebody will get sucked in by your post

OR

2. You have no idea about poker FULL STOP.

If you reply Option 1, then kudos to you and your post as it was almost believable.

If you reply Option 2, then I will provide 10 reasons why you have no clue about Poker.

Other than that, I've already wasted enough time with this reply.

Hi Fiddla aka Joeytez what is your problem?

I have made good money at the 2/3 tables (much more than you by the sounds of your bitterness) I have also cashed in all tournaments I have played in but 1 (KJ cracked by pocket 9s).

So give me your 'reasons' why I have no clue about poker...idiot!

1. VARIANCE

2. BANKROLL MANAGEMENT

3. CANNOT BEAT 2/5 @ CROWN BUT WANT TO VENTURE TO VEGAS (DO I NEED TO EVEN MENTION ANOTHER 7 REASONS???)

4. PLAYING SINCE DECEMBER AND STILL WANT TO VENTURE TO VEGAS = NO CONCEPT OF VARIANCE/DOWNSWINGS OR BANKROLL MANAGEMENT.

5. PLAY MULTI-TABLE CASH GAMES ONLINE FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS, AND YOU WILL BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND REASONS 1 &2 (THAT’S IF YOU DON’T GO BROKE FIRST). THERE'S ALWAYS GUITAR HERO TO FALL BACK ON!!!

6. TILT (THIS WILL BECOME VERY EVIDENT DURING REASON 5).

7. READ “YOYO - THE ACEHIGH WINE INTERVIEW” (SCROLL DOWN. YOU WILL SEE IT). THIS IS THE REALITY OF POKER, AND THE ACTUAL SUPSERSTARS OF POKER ARE AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE.

8. PLAYING 2/3 @ CROWN IS NOT ENOUGH OF A HAND SAMPLE SIZE TO UNDERSTAND REASONS 1 & 2.

9. REPEAT WHAT YOU SAID IN YOUR ORIGINAL POST TO ANY REGULAR 2/3 & 2/5 PLAYER @ CROWN AND YOU WILL FIND THAT MY REACTION IS PRETTY TAME. THEY WILL LAUGH AT YOU AND TELL YOU TO STOP DREAMING ABOUT FANTASY LAND IF THEY ARE REALLY HONEST.

10. PLEASE POST IN ANOTHER 2 YEARS AND TELL ME HOW MUCH OF A SUPERSTAR YOU ARE AND ALSO REMIND ME OF HOW MUCH OF A BROKE DEGENERATE I AM.

P.S. Cam01, I know I should know better, but I just couldn’t resist. I’m getting a very queezy feeling that PokaProdigy might be “for real”.

Joeytez I think I know what I am talking about considering I do it as a job.

1. yes I understand variance I have had AA cracked that many times by idiots calling with 102o preflop (he hit a 10 on the flop then a 2 on the river!)

2 & 3 I can beat 2/5 but its bad bankroll management surely you would understand this!!!

5. I wont play online I have seen too many bad beats to know that the RNG is either rigged or not natural like the natural progress of dealing cards by hand.

6. I dont tilt because its my job i cant afford to tilt.

7. read it - good interview although he sounds pretty bitter, probably because he loses lol

8. I have played for 6months how much longer do u want me to play to prove I am a winner geeez.
9. Some of the regulars beleive I am good enough to go.

10. I will proudly do so.

heres my results since March

Note this doesnt include $2k in tourney cashes and probably about $4k more in cash from when I wasnt recording my results.

I think my results speak for themselves! Click to enlarge:

also about the KJ hand obviously it wasnt cracked if we got it all in preflop because then its a coin flip.... the board was J34 or something and he went all in, I called and he hit a 9 on the turn. I just said nice hand and left because it wasnt that bad for him to push all in, if he had CALLED an all in.... that would have been a real bad beat though..

It really depends on the situation (cash game/tournament, how deep you are, how many players on the table etc) but a hand like KJ most times is a trouble hand and while you were ahead at that particular point, playing hands like this will often get you beat by sub-par hands. With his push he could of had a set, an overpair or AJ so there wan't that much you could beat. The fact that he was ahead pre-flop, its probably justice that he hit his 9, and probably a lesson for you.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this forum is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

OMG!!! This guy is for real and not a troll.

Please keep posting those detailed excel spreadsheets so that I can keep on laughing.

This is your job???

That means playing 8 hrs per day like the average person, and deriving no other income from any other source.

Please keep posting those awesome excel spreadsheets as this thread is starting to get really entertaining.

$10K in 5 months??? what are you going to eat and where are you going to live while you're in Vegas??? I presume you live at home at the moment coz $10K in 5 months = $24K per year, and this is without having a downswing.

"ONLINE POKER IS RIGGED" Did everybody else read that as well or was I imagining that statement??? This must be Joe the Nuts showing off his new Excel skills.

CHEERS

JOEYTEZ

P.S. Please stop posting for your own sake, and please stop listening to the retards you sit next to at Crown.
P.P.S. Actually, do me a favour and leave for Vegas now. This will save you a a lot of heartache in the long run. I'm only trying to help you, but it seems like some players just can't be helped.
P.P.S. If I didn't have to go out now, I could right another 1,00 reasons why you shouldn't go to Vegas after seeing that spreadsheet.
