Rounders (1998) - “The poker room at the Mirage in Vegas is the center of the poker universe. Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Phil Helmuth, the legends consider it their office. Every couple of days a new millionaire shows up wanting to beat a world champion. Usually they go home with nothing but a story.” (Mike McDermott as he drives from New York to Atlantic City)
The Mirage was home to The Big Game back then and now it's Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio. But it looks like that’s about to change again.
Walking into the newly opened poker room at Aria in January earlier this year, everything there was classy and playing there was certainly comfortable, un-crowded (it had been open barely a month) and relaxing. I wondered though, how would yet another upscale new poker room do in Vegas after the ones at the Bellagio, the Wynn, the Venetian, the Hard Rock, etc? With the Ivey Room in the poker room at Aria officially opening just days ago with a $1M invitational freeroll and the WSOP kicking off, I think it’s going to do fine.
When I thought more about it, I realised, a poker room isn't just about a big name. A poker room is so much more too than the tables, the amenities, the game and even (heaven forbid) the money. It’s all about the people, the players, and what happens there that makes a poker room. The players at a poker room make the stories and the stories are what are told at the poker tables, the world over.
Texas Billionaire Andy Beal vs the Corporation (Doyle, Chip, Chau, Barry, Jennifer, et al) at the Bellagio, Ted Forrest & Hamid Dastmalchi’s 4 day “death match” at the Mirage, CPA Chris Moneymaker and Aussie Joe Hachem at Binions, Annette at the Empire, Andy vs the Corporation at the Wynn, Yukon Brad bluffing Phil Ivey at South Point (HSP Season 3), the stories are endless and even more will be made and told this June in Vegas.
