Mixed Emotions

Ive decided Im going to try and keep a semi-regular blog so here i go.

Its been a pretty up and down few months for me, culminating in a topsy turvy week, where i picked up 2 five figure scores and a WSOP package, as well as busting early at ANZPT Sydney and dropping big chip leads in 1k FTOPS, Sunday 500, Stars 100c Turbo and coming 2nd in another WSOP package on FTP.

I cant help but feel really dissappointed as i believe i could have made it one of the best weeks ever, but in saying that, i shouldnt complain. I had the week off from work for R&R, and i think i probably overdid it, playing too many tables for too many hours. I need to manage my tourneys better, as i cant seem to play more than 3-4 tables at my best.

In saying that, i still turned a tidy profit, and am super-excited about heading over to Vegas for the first time, to tackle the beast that is the WSOP Main Event. Just the thought of playing in a tournament that potentially has a first prize of 10 million dollars sends shivers down my spine.

This has been a dream of mine for a while now, and i just cant wait to get out there. Im going to take my Dad with me, as he has always wanted to go to Vegas, and at least ill have a cheering squad in the form of a little, not-that-old Sicilian man.

Live poker has not gone well for me this year, after what i thought was a fair 2009. So far ive bricked ANZPT Adelaide, Perth and Sydney all in the first few levels. My only decent result was coming 5th in a prelim event in Perth, but its such a small sample size, that im not too worried about it.

However, before the WSOP, i have the APPT Macau Main Event to get through, and im really pumped for a good run. Im going to try and prepare a little better for this one, with a few minor adjustments to my normal routine, so i hope that goes well.

These next few months are going to be crucial for me, as im going to base my decision on whether to quit work and play full time, around them. The truth is that im devoting too much time to poker, and both cant coincide at the same level for much longer. In a year and a bit, ive taken time off to play at 2009 Aussie Millions, Melb Champs, Vic Champs, APPT Auckland, APPT Sydney, 2010 ANZPT Adel, Per, Syd and am taking time off for Macau and WSOP. There aren't too many companies that would accept that from a senior management staff member, so its time i made a commitment to one or the other. If i can pick up 6 figures in that time, ill quit my job. If not (and realistically the odds are obv not in my favour) then ill more or less quit poker.

If i was a single man, it would be the easiest decision in the world, but i have a wife, 3 kids and a 500k mortgage, so it will be a big few months for me. The pressure is on, and i guess thats how ive always liked it. Im really happy with my game at the moment (apart from a few big blow ups late in tourneys) and i have the confidence that on my day, i can match it with the best.

Im back at work tommorow for 2 weeks before i fly to Macau, so im going to miss most of the SCOOP and FTOPS events (do'h), but i will try and keep this blog up to date with my progress.

All the best,

Sal
