Default Play more hands/ Fold less?

hi, ive recently gotten into poker, im reading Dan Harrinton book for casual reading trying to get better.

problem im facing is when i have an average hand and someone raises a large amount pre-flop or on 4th street, i would usually fold , but then the cards that come up would give me the winning hand. This happens all too often, should i be more risky in playing average hands such as Q9 for example? or am i doing the correct thing by folding

Fold these hands.

Particularly when you're learning, try and keep it simple - play your big hands fast and fold your iffy hands.

Crap like Q-9 will only get you into trouble.

Q9 is only good in Blackjack.

These sort of "pretty hands" ..... QT KT etc.... just cause you to dump a lot of money
