Default Not quiet a total beginner............but almost

    Hey guys,

I hope there hasn't been a shit load of posts like this on this forum and im making you have to repeat yourself (I havent found any while lurking around)...............but anyway

I've just arrived in Australia from Scotland and im no longer playing rugby for the first time in about fifteen years. I played (tournament) Holdem in home and casino games on a regular basis back home but it was really just for shits and giggles. Now that its my main hobby over hear I really am keen to take my game to the next level. So the question is........................whats the best way to go about it?????

I know its a bit of a vague question for such a complex game but do you's people have any advice. I know there's nothing like playing a shit load of poker but I want to do stuff to back that up.

What books do I want to be reading?
What live games do I want to be playing in?
    Do you recommend coaching?
Where do I start with internet poker (which I have very little experiance in)?
    Ring games vs tournaments????
How much money should I be investing in my bank roll? etc etc etc

Any advice would be much appreciated folks.

    cheers

We do play rugby here in Aus, and considering we've won 2 world cups to Scotland's 0ur game might improve playing here. Plus there's an added bonus of not having to play in bogged marsh land here.

Well the first thing is what are you trying to achieve - hobby with a bit more chance of winning or becoming a winning player long term with profitability hopes.

Books that I read in order:

    1. Phil Gordons Green book the blue book.
    2. Helmuths poker like the pros (I know, I know) use this for starting hand ranges at the micros it will help but the rest is pretty useless.
    3. Harrington on Holdem all of them (tourney strategy)
    4. Sklnaskys tournamet strategy for advanced players
    5. Super system
    6. PLO (there are three main books i read them all)

Most of these are quite old but all add value still cause most of the people playing now would have read them so that gets you on a level playing field for the most part.

games - well if your online i would stick to what makes sense from an affordability. if your tourney/SNG orientated then basically set up for 1% of your deposit buy ins (start with like $400 minimum i reckon allows you into the $3 for a while.)

if your playing SNGs you can stick the $1 ones or something and see how you go.

Cash just go to 2/5c and start there.

invest in PT3 or Holdem Manager as tracking software (they have small stakes versions for cheap).

if your more a live player then 1/2 is probably the smalles game in Aus anyway and if your brissy probably tis 2/3 in reality.

then do as many hands as makes sense in your schedule. expect to fail. its part of learning. remember a black belt is just a white belt that never gave up.

    cheers

    DO NOT READ THIS BOOK

All of the information in it is wrong or outdated even for micros.

Go with Harrington or Phil Gordon's books.

Yes to coaching. Cardrunners, Deucescracked etc

Tourneys vs cash is a matter of preference

    Learn about bankroll management

In relation to the above two coaching websites. Does anyone have an opinion on which is best?
