    Default Ace chasers... HELP

Okay, just finished a freeroll with two addons before break and two addons at the break for $5 each. It tends to draw a larger crowd for this reason. With this comes a lot of wannabe gurus that play loose and chase aces, but tend to hit the damn things on the turn or river. They therefore chip up and carry on with this play due to their luck Can someone please give me some advice on how to beat ace chasers. Here is a hand that particularly annoyed me.

Second hand into game with stacks of 3,000. I'm second to act with Q-10os and limp into the pot with 50 and so do 5 others. Flop comes Q-K-5 rainbow and it is checked to me so I raise to 200. All others fold exept the player in last position with A-7os who calls casually. Turn brings a 3 so I bet out with 200 which is called again. River comes as an Ace and I bet another 200 which is only called.

I obviously lose the hand and the guy starts talking about how his ace was always ahead of my Q-10os even though I had hit my queen on the flop and he had nothing. This guy goes on to dominate for the next 90 minutes and was still looking strong when I was eventually knocked out by another river rat with a stack.

What I really want to know is whether that bastard was right. I understand bad luck and all, but he was playing what I would call poor hands most of the night and kept raking in the pots. What am I missing here? I've ran a few hands through pokerstove, including the one mentioned above, and my interpretations are matched by that programme, but here I am knocked down and out by chasers.

This is a live tournament? Is it pub league when blinds start 25/50?

I think there are a couple of things wrong with your play here from the beginning. First is playing pub poker.

Second your 3000 stack - is that with the two add ons? As you should be looking to add on straight away to build your stack to 9000.

Third, limping in with Q 10 off suit from UTG+1 is never really a good idea.

however since you did, Your C- bet is good. Nice test of the water with 5 others in the pot, and K on the board is a good scare card when everyone has limped....

When only one person is calling behind, you second pair will be good most of the time, but you mostly would be up against, j 10, k9, j 9 type of hands rather than what he had. So... I'd probably be betting a bit more than 200 into an 800 pot on the turn if you want to stop drawing hands. Especially with such a brick of a turn card. Reason being, if people are going to chase - make them pay the most you think you can get from them... and if you are beat you would be finding out about it right there. I'd be betting 4 -500 here at least as you sound like you did not think at one time this guy

What happened on the river? Did it go check- check? or bet call? or check bet call?

This just sounds like a bad beat story... if you are serious about improving your game, don't donk your money and time off and wasting 3-4hrs of your life playing pub poker. Although I will admit it is a good spot to learn the basics, but once you develop your knowledge of how the basics work, It will just infuriate you with imbecilic play like this, plus you will get in great arguments about how awesome people are.

It always happens because live poker is rigged
Change to a different venue where the rng is better and bad beats don't happen

    don't open limp

    fold QTo UTG+1

don't bet 200 then 200 then 200; calculate total pot on each street and improve your bet sizing.

Villain with A7 is a moron

    'Ace Chasers' will go broke

Nobody had bought addons at my table yet, we kind of just started playing.

Okay, I'm looking to improve my starting hands. If someone can point me to a guide of the strengths of various hands relative to what position I'm sitting in, that would be awesome. All I have so far is an expected value guide, but it says nothing of position.

I have no idea what a C- bet is though.

And do you mean to up the bet to 400-500 at the turn or should I have bet that amount after the flop came?

With the turn and river I kept betting first and he kept calling.

I'm guessing this is similar to what smokinsam69 is saying. What sort of calculations am I looking at here? Do I bet the pot or particular percentage of it in each instance? And is this to show strength or encourage a fold and so reduce the river rat?

It is usually not a good idea, but it will depend on other factors like the dynamic at the table etc. but yeah especially in a freeroll then its a fold 95% of the times.

however since you did, Your C- bet is good. Nice test of the water with 5 others in the pot, and K on the board is a good scare card when everyone has limped....

yes way to small bet on the turn.

    Stop playing free rolls
I think freerolls are fine for those who have never played online before or dont know the rules. Just to get to know the basics, but as soon as you know those, then for sure play for real monet. There is a big difference as soon as there is a buyin involved. Even if its just $1.
Many sites have some big guaranteed $1 tours, and you could start with those if you want to go the tournament route.

You seem to lack the very basic knowledge and should be abel to find some free useful articles online or buy a few beginner poker books to learn the basics.

How can you not know what a C-bet is yet understand an expected value guide?

    btw: c-bet = Continuation bet

Ah thanks. Just never heard the term before. Actually been playing Hold'em for around 15 years now, but never more than casually with friends or online with play money just to pass time. So the lingo is something I'm still coming to terms with.

And I'm really starting to see that I have a lot to learn in how to actually bet too. I have so far only put effort into learning hand strengths/values and obvious plays by others.
