There's not enough information in your post to give a conclusive answer, mate. Do you have any examples of hand histories? In order to gauge where you are going wrong we would need to know information such as:

    • Position of the players in the hand
    • The blinds and antes if it is a tournament
    • Any reads on your opponents

For example, I would happy pay off a weak opponent who was sat with 10 big blinds but be lesser inclined to get QQ in for 200BB.

I don't know if this helps you "boyshadow"

But I have to agree with yorkshire.

I remember playing a tourney, I had a relatively tight player on my immediate left and a loose canon about 4 seats away. I was coming 3rd in chips after we migrated down to 2 tables. I was dealt KK UTG. I raised pre-flop 4 BB, the player on my immediate left flat calls me, the other player raised. I decided to re-raise, I figured I'm happy to go up against 2 players with an AJ or AQ when I have KK, I figured if they both have a high A my KK should hold up. The player on my immediate left shoved. Unfortunately, my re-raise pot committed me, I felt that I had to call. I was correct about one hand, but the player, the tight player on my immediate left had AA. I busted out.

I look at poker this way. If you start laying hands like KK, QQ to an unknown field, then you may as well give up poker altogether. Yorkshire is correct. Pay off the weak players that manage to catch a hand (occasionally), be wary of players that are inclined to call then shove to a re-raise.

There is both an element of luck and skill in poker. Determining which is which at any given time is the skill aspect of the game. Statistically, High pairs will hold up against 1 over card.
