Firstly, my chips are stacked correctly - just so it is clear, he is able to count them if he gets up and has a look.

secondly he was a whole table length away and on my ear plug side so although i heard the question I actually miss heard what he asked. also he had asked tell questions before, as soon as he asked i took my plug out of my ear so i could communicate with him properly.

Anyway...i dont think i had poor etiquitte at the time it was a one off miss understanding which i wanted to check.

my music was not loud I could hear the dealer who was closer of course.

anyway interesting responses and i still come back to my base thought that maybe it should be work it out yourself. i dont know I have seen pros who give a estimate and then other go well it is all stacked you can count it on TV so just wanted to know your thoughts...

This, give an estimate, if he wants an exact count the dealer can do it. Make sure your high denom chips are visible and you're fine.
