My copy of Super System 2 arrived in the mail today and so I've commenced reading it. It is only the second poker book I've ever read (the other was "Zen and the Art of Poker" by Larry W. Philips).I am up to page 135 of 600+ and have already learned two things I did not know.1. Doyle Brunson is a complete and utter idiot.2. Mike Caro is actually quite an amusing writer. If my opinion changes by page 600, I will let you all know.As it stands, I am accepting offers for this worthless piece of trash.yoyo

Daniel, it would be remiss of me to sell you this book as it belongs in the kitchen bin. I'll probably put it on Ebay, or give it away if I can't be bothered. It should be retitled: "Stating the Bleeding Obvious" or "Hey, I'm an Idiot" by Doyle Brunson.yoyo

That is a good idea.We agree on one thing Yoyo, I don't like Doyles supersystem 2 book either. I think it doesn't cover any topic in depth enough to give any decent player an advantage from where they are. However, if a player does not have much of a background, or wants to increase their general knowledge on multiple poker games, then I guess its okay.Anyhow, if the book isn't in a state of disrepair (from being thrown accross the room) I'll make an offer on it too. I bid $20.Oh, and if anybody else wants to sell their second hand poker books, I'll buy those too (if price is right), as I always have many poker students who wants to buy second hand poker books.

The book has no valuable new advice for other games. The no limit advice was just mostly a rehash of Brunson's advice in the original supersystem. The 7 card stud and omaha-hi and hi-lo advise are too simplistic and caters too much for the unfamiliar player. A player keen to learn the hi-lo games are much better off with Ray Zee's books, and for pot limit omaha, i believe Ciaffone's and Mahmood's books are just so much better. That being said, although I do not really appreciate most of the book, the section written on triple draw by Dan Negreanu is worth it's weight is gold! I have never seen such a precise, well-formulated strategy in print for that game! Pity nobody will play it in real life, but from what I've understand in online play, the players are VERY clueless due to the inavailability of study material.

I have been playing poker for a while and want to read my first book to see if it helps adavance my game. I only really play no-limit holdem but thought a book with everything would be good to have for the future. But I'm a bit confused because all I have ever heard about Super System (1) is that it is the "poker bible", only truly valuable poker book etc etc so I thought it would be perfect for me to get. Since I have not read the first I thought I would buy number 2 so even if it's a lot like the first it doesn't matter cos I haven't read either. Is 2 worst than 1 or do you guys reckon they are both crap? Or are you saying its crap just because its too much like the first so theres no point reading both. Cheers, I appreciate any help

Hi KKman.I never actually said it was 'crap'.In my opinion, it is a too generalistic approach to the many games. To have a complete knowledge of say Holdem poker it would take a book approx 1000 pages? and NL maybe two thousand? to fully cover all current topics and modern thinking. It tries to cover most modern games to a modicum of levels. The first was heralded as the 'bible of poker' because there was a significant lack of competent poker literature at the time. It gave knowledge that was seen as the arena of the advanced player in a fairly upfront manner. In current times, many books do this well. I would suggest if you wanted to expand your knowledge in a particular area of poker, to choose a game, and get the relevant material.

Brunson's advice is still very good, but it must be remembered that his advice is mostly catered for a game with very very deep stacked games against top quality opposition.Brunson also did correctly pointed out in Super System 2 that against weak opposition, you'll just have to show a hand down.

KKman,Read Super/System 1, if only for the reason that so many other players have read it, so reading it will put you on their level, so to speak. There is a lot of valuable information that will help your game, even if some of his advice is outdated or covered in other books. Brunson, despite some strange ideas on ESP, has some good advice on poker in general, advice that stands today.
