In NSW, Pub Poker is certainly the catalyst for growth, not sure about the impact of Pub poker in places like NT, WA, Victoria and SA and whether it holds a candle to the impact pub poker has made here in Sydney and surrounding areas, it's not really my area of expertise. Perhaps Diplomatic Immunity can give an indication of numbers etc.

As far as worldwide growth of poker over the past ten years, TV and internet have in all likelihood played a far greater role than any other medium, which I guess Strong Play was alluding to in his post.

I'm not sure if 'the rest' part is quite accurate, although i'm not going to argue that Pub Poker doesn't bring a lot of new players to the game.

In terms of a professional player trying to make a living, pub poker may or may not have a large impact, as i'd hazard a guess that only a very small minority of pub poker players graduate to the regular local 'tours' or even to decent sized live cash games. I would concede, however, that it is likely that a bunch of pub poker players eventually find their way online and contribute to cash games and bigger prize pool tournaments like the Stars Sunday Million or some smaller WCOOP events.

Regardless, i'm pretty sure people are missing the point of the thread anyway, which was one of Australia's poker pioneers giving credit where he thinks it is due. Obviously I wasn't around playing poker in the 90s (as is the case with 99.5% of this forum's contributors) so can't really comment either way. If Maurie believes these guys are most responsible for poker being what it is today, then I say kudos to you all, as it has probably made an improvement in my way of life over the past four years, given me opportunities to travel to places that I otherwise would never have been, and has helped me spend more time with my children as they grow up.

Not one of these people I have mentioned play Internet poker or the casinos.
ah I see, so because 20 people you know learnt in pubs then it's case closed?

I didn't learn in a pub, no one I know learnt in a pub, the net was around long before the pub games we see now existed... I, and everyone who took up the game when I did had two choices, a shady back-room game where we would invariably get robbed or worse (and not learn anything), or the net...

and what about practically every other country in the world where there are no pub games? - is pub poker still the catalyst there?
Seriously rickwaa be more of a loser.

I am pretty sure I know what the 100,000 players a week that play in hotels think of your comments.

Ultimate Bet, Absolute Poker, FTP and The list goes on .... No robbery there
don't bother trying to argue with sheer numbers of players in Australia, because the fact is that APL get more players in a week to Canley Heights RSL and Mounties Club than all of the ANZPT Games do in a year. The buyin amount is irrelevant.

If the buyin amount is so relevant, why do you, Chu, play $33 - $109 tournaments online ? They are such relevant buyin amounts. Big, big games.

The success, and succession, of any game comes from the grass roots level.

This is why Rugby League and AFL are fighting so hard for the junior league and players in Sydney's West - Even they acknowledge they are nowhere without Junior Leagues.

Whether you like it or not, Internet and Major Poker events need pub poker far more than pub poker needs a Sunday Million online game, or an Aussie Millions.

This is a phenomenon accepted worldwide - It's a simple pyramid shaped illustration of demand

Then perhaps you can clue me in as to why I've never seen it in a pub anywhere across the world bar Australia?

Am I going to the wrong places? - perhaps I am simply not noticing?

1 - This thread is talking about Australia

2 - I can't imagine you going anywhere except da internetz

3 - Poker has been a pastime in America enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people long before Mark Zuckerberg created a tool for tools to live their life online

    4 - This is fun
