    Default What happened to Manilla?

Back in the 1980's, decades before hold'em became so widely popular, the only game I could find in Australia was Manilla. Occasionally games of draw poker and short deck stud might be found. Nobody wanted to know about Texas Hold'em. It was said to be a game of pure chance, while stud, draw and manilla were considered to be games of skill.
When and why did this all change?

    Just wondering.

Johnny Too Bad....you are about to let the tiger that is JK out the cage.

    #1 ...it's MANILA...with ONE 'L'

#2 ....it has yet to die off in the Slav and Greek and other ethnic clubs,,,,it slowly is, as 1st and 2nd generation imports are dying off....moving on to other forms of 21st century gambling

#3,,, a lot of people STILL do not want to know about HOLD'EM...a game where 70% of the info is on the board....

WOULD LOVE TO SEE THESE "young guns" in an old style Draw Poker, Pot limit or 7 card Stud, Pot limit game.

Their 10 best NEW SCHOOL young gun, against 10 OLD SCHOOL old guns - the games being Draw and 7 card....

Texas is of great interest to the sub 40yo player because:

its shown on tv and fantasy-engagement is possible,
its grown into a multi-billion dollar internet industry,
it is relatively simple to master (contrasted to the ultimate poker variety: 7-card)

pub poker ($10 per player kick-back to organiser) has helped but, to me, the expansion of language is a silent factor in its growth.

Media encouraged vocabulary expansion. In the eighties you would struggle to get a 100-word lexicon. Now it seems like about 20,000 words and phrases in the poker dictionary. Subtle calibrations between terms.

Fluency in poker language is perceived as poker skill. Many can talk well, but few can actually play well. Media and other vested interests keep the delusion via language going; losing players keep rolling up to make contributions because their use of poker language perpetuates the myth; their myth. Wittgenstein would have got right into the sociological and psychological elements of poker linguistics.

The number of Omaha tables at Crown last Sat was into double figures. I was the only +40yo on my table. The need to over-complicate their game through language (rather than demonstrated skill) was equal to, if not greater than, Texas Youth. Like the analogy of slicing through an onion, every player there had no idea there were several layers of understanding beyond their inner existences sitting at the table with them. Silent but listening. Listening. Devoting all cerebral activity to using multiple analysis techniques (textual, content and sensory) to interpreting their gratis speech and other offerings.

Mixed my game up a few times and an hour and a half netted $845 on a 1/2 PLO table.

Twenty years ago on a Manilla table same buyin, same hour and a half.....passo passo passo passo etc; maybe $40 up maybe $40 down.

7-card ? Hmmmmm......never come back. Skill levels required are too high for the current batch of language-is-everything brave young Turks.

(oh and re a prev thread I spoke to Vic T the other day @ Crown. Lost weight but he wasn't too bad at all. Bit more to go through but he had that same serious stony face on the river)

    Adapt or perish

In honor of your normal handy work , Johnny Too Bad .....

    Wind him up
    Put him down
Start him off and watch him go
He'll be running circles around you sooner than you know
    A little off centre
    And he's out of chips
Just kicking these young guns down the avenue
    But he's alright

Coz it's easy once you know how it's done
    You can't stop now
    It's already begun
    You feel it
    Running through your bones

    And you JK it out
    And you JK it out

    Shut up
    Hush your mouth
Can't you hear you talk too loud
No he can't hear nothing cause he can't understand Andy McLeod
He bites off anything that young guns can chew
He's chasing moffo up and down the avenue
    But that's JK

Coz it's easy once you know how it's done
    You can't stop now
    It's already begun
    You feel it
    Running through your bones

    So you JK it out

    And you JK it out
    And you JK it out
    And you JK it out
    And you JK it out

Oh baby don't you know you really gotta JK it out

When you JK it out baby don't you know you really gotta JK it out
When you JK it out baby don't you know you really gotta JK it out

Not bad UnEducated but not the same quality as Johnny Too Bads' work.

Manila is not dead.It is waiting for my return to Australia for its revival.

It is a pity that Aussie casinos won't promote Manila.

In the early days ,just before Sydney opened its poker room, one of the main
casino managers was heard to say when asked about Manila,"We don't want that kind of customer in our casino".

But it was OK for this kind of customer to lose his money on casino games.

    Nice tribute UnEd.
But be careful, one more poem about JK. and may actually become a living legend.

Is the Manila game at Crown limit or no limit?

    Just wondering.
