Default What killed pub poker in sydney?

I think its safe to say that pub poker is dead in Sydney.

    What killed it?

Lets be clear 98% of joe public doesn't want to go to the casino its seen as a luxury your average joe schlob does once a year.

Online will never be big in Australia, atleast not in the next decade or so.

For a while there poker was actually bordering on becoming an accepted sport people were playing seriously, and getting right into it and even trying to educate themselves on some of the finer points of it.

Every pub or club had at least a game a week or in some instances 2-3 games a week.

Initially it started of as a bit of fun with most clubs putting up pub or club dollars, meal vouchers or such like that and people treated it as a bit of a lark.

Then we had the advent of APL, NPL and a plethora of others, and buyins started first at the $5 and $10 mark with the club or pub normally throwing in $200-$300 of their own money.

Numbers at this point were sky rocketing and we were even seeing poker teams being formed with their own shirts and such.

For a while their we had all the pokerdomes, jade tavern, masonics, and a few others I cant think of operating.

At some stage there were literally 10,000's playing poker in sydney.

Then seemingly in a 1 year period it dried up.

    What happened?

In reply to my own thread.

I am going to list a point a day.

    A. Transparency of the buyins. This was the begging of the end and when poker operators first started to get too greedy, and well they had to, thanks to their constant undercutting of eachother in some cases instead of getting the $10 a player they were working for free at venues and had to pay their costs somehow.

    I. Nothing annoyed players more turning up to a $500 guarantee tournament and buying in only to be told that the prize pool of $500 would increase once it reached $500.

II. With a lot of venues it was blatantly obvious that not all of the buyin was going to the prize it was being fleeced.

III. Cause they were working for free they then began taking on the $10+2 and the $20+5 ect which everyone hated.

Next I am going to cover the rebuys and addons and how it put people off.

it got too fancy for its own good.

Add ons, rebuys, too many chips floating round. It soul was lost.
It aint dead though, just retreated to niche status.
