Default Star license renewal, NSW cash tournaments

I saw a small article in the paper the other day about howStar City's license was up for renewal. Basically they'll haveto pay a lot of money to the NSW State Government sothey can be the only casino in NSW for the next few years.Star pays less tax on pokies profits than pubs/clubs, analysts say the government prefers getting the money upfront in form of thelicense fee anyway.Expect some pushing and shoving between Star and the Governmenton this matter. In fact, perhaps we already are. Considersome recent developments:* NSW regulations relaxed so that gaming licensed premises (any place with poker machines) can run cash tournaments* Star City suddenly running tournaments themselves, after several years of just cash games. Star wouldn't want cash tournaments anywhere besides Pyrmont,so don't be surprised if the NSW regulations changes are an attemptby the Government to stand up to Star City and threaten to take awaytheir cash tourney monopoly. If Star come to the table with a bigpayment for the license fee, expect the regulations to change againand for cash tourneys outside of Star to return to their formerillegal status. While poker is only a small piece of the casino pie, the APA bustsin Adelaide prove that existing stakeholders will act to protecttheir interests.

Perhaps if someone is trying to set up a poker room the ACCC needs to get involved to prevent the existing monopoly to continue

"""""""Doctor, there has been no relaxion of regulations as far as im aware, no changes to any regulations ahve been made... people have simply realised what the regulations are and have always been...and also, star have surely started tournements due to the popularity and perhaps success of such tournaments at crown and every other australian casino...also several years? hasn't poker only been at star for 2 or 3 years? not sure about this last point

oh i didn't read that ACCC post that is classic... Getting the ACCC involved to get rid of a monopoly that funds the ACCC itself (through gambling 'license fees' and taxes) is quite a funny thought... I dont think that will happen in Australia...also as a side issue, how did Las Vegas come to have so many Casino's ? Competing crime groups ? one of the few states in Us with legal gambling? government figuring by having more casino's they made more taxes?JK i'm sure you know the answer to this, i'd be interested to know if you have a spare sec..

I may be trying to "join the dots" on dots that are unrelated, zero. It's still interesting that APL, Central Coast and Star City are allstarting up tournaments about the same time. Probably this is a natural response to the poker explosion and nothing at all to dowith Star's license renewal.

zero: as a side issue, how did Las Vegas come to have so many Casinos ? Every time Frank Sinatra got banned, another Casino would open forhim.
