| 5 Card Draw - 5 face down cards are delivered to each player. After a round of betting, players discard and draw. Another round of betting, and then a showdown |
| 7 Card Stud - Each player receives two private cards and an individual unique up card. After a round of betting, another up card is delivered to each player. Again there is a round of betting, then yet another card. This continues until each player has 6 cards with the last card being dealt to the remaining players face down. Players use their best 5 cards to make their final hand. There is no button in stud, rather the highest hand showing has the first action |
| Aces Up - A pair of aces with one other pair |
| Action - The betting. (If the action is on you, its your turn) |
| Action Card - A community card which could induce betting and raising because of it is likely to have “made” some people’s hands |
| Active Player - A player still involved in a hand, because they have not folded |
| Add-on - Some tournaments allow players the opportunity at a certain point to buy additional chips, called an add-on. This is different from a rebuy, because usually everyone still in the tournament is able to add-on. Add-ons usually mark the end of the rebuy period |
| Advertise - A tactical move to have a usually small sized bluff called in order to encourage opponents to call later. Also the action of showing a winning hand, despite the option to muck |
| Air - When a player holds no cards of value and needs to bluff to win |
| All-in - When a player puts the last of their chips into a pot, that player is said to be all-in. An all-in player is not eligible to win more money from any other player then what he had at the table before the pot. The all-in player will be eligible for the main pot and if other players bet more there will be a side pot, which will the all-in player is not eligible to win |
| Angle shooting - The action of misleading other players as to the contents of a concealed hand at showdown, such as deliberately announcing a different hand from which you have, so that other players at the table muck hands that would win. See Cheater |
| Announced Bet - A verbal bet made by a player before putting his money in the pot |
| Ante - Money put in the pot before dealing |
| Baby - A small card, usually a five or less |
| Back-to-back - A pair on the first two cards dealt in stud (Backed Up) |
| Backdoor - Catching cards on the turn and river in Hold ‘em to make a winning hand |
| Backer - A non player who finances an active player |
| Bad Beat - The situation in which a very strong hand is beaten by an even stronger hand. Or the situation in which a player is a high percentage favorite to win a hand and loses |
| Bad Beat Jackpot - In our poker room we offer a Jackpot for players that get beaten on extremely strong hands. What qualifies as a Bad Beat Jackpot varies from game to game and you can find all information about it under poker rules |
| Bankroll - Funds used to play poker with, usually exclusively for the purpose of poker |
| Beat the Board (Table) - To have a hand better than all others showing |
| Behind - To be an underdog in a hand by percentages. Also the amount of chips behind, is how many chips a player has left after they bet |
| Belly-Buster Straight - An inside straight |
| Bet - To be the first player to put money into the pot during a particular betting round |
| Bet Into - To bet before another player who apparently has a better hand |
| Bet the Limit - To bet the maximum amount allowed |
| Betting Stakes - The dollar limits of all bets and raises permitted |
| Bicycle - A straight to the five . . . ace, two, three, four, five. See Wheel |
| Big Bet Poker - Pot limit and No limit poker are sometimes referred to as Big Bet Poker. The "Big" in a sense refers to the size of bets relative to the pot, irrespective of the amount of money involved |
| Big Blind - The player to the left of the small blind, or 2 seats left of the dealer button. The big blind is equal to the minimum betting unit for the game |
| Blank - A way of describing a community card that did not help the player. Also known as a Brick |
| Bleeding Chips - Also known as spewing chips, it means to be losing chips rapidly usually through poor play. See Tilt |
| Blind Bet - To bet before looking at one's hand |
| Blind Off - The process of paying blinds while not at the table. Occurs in Tournaments |
| Blinds - Bets placed into the pot before the cards are dealt. The blinds are always the to the left of the dealer button |
| Blocking Bet - A small bet, put out with the intention to discourage larger bets |
| Bluff - The attempt to win a pot by making better hands fold |
| Board - A way of describing the community cards as a whole |
| Boxed Card - A card turned the wrong way in a deck |
| Brick and Mortar - A physical land based casino |
| Bring-in - To bring in the betting is to make the first bet on the first round of a hand (not including blinds bets and antes) |
| Bubble - The last possible non pay-out position in a tournament. To be eliminated in this position is to have “bubbled” |
| Bump - A raise |
| Burn Card - A card dealt face down prior to dealing the round of cards |
| Busted Hand - (1) A worthless hand (Bust). (2) A hand that failed to fill a straight or a flush on the draw |
| Button - The button determines the order of action. Moving clockwise around the table, each player gets the button once per round of play |
| Buy-in - The amount of money with which you enter a game is your buy-in. In a non-tournaments game, this is the amount you get in chips. In a tournament, your buy-in is the amount that costs you to get your initial number of tournament chips |
| C-Note - A hundred-dollar bill |
| Call - Money put in the pot to match a bet or raise |
| Calling Station - A player who calls almost any bet |
