On Saturday, the remaining 48 players of a 1,001 player field in Event #50 $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em returned to the Amazon Room at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to battle down to a winner; however, given the field exceeded even the wildest expectations, an impromptu Day 4 was expected before the tournament would reach its conclusion.

After ten levels of play, that’s exactly what will happen as the remaining three players will return on Sunday to play for the $952,694 first-place prize. Leading the way is Dan Smith, who bagged up 6,620,000. Contesting him are Kyle Julius (4,435,000) and Panayote "Pete" Vilandos (3,955,000), the latter seeking his third gold bracelet.

Day 3 kicked off with a bang as the eliminations came fast. Dominykas Karmazinas (48th-$17,360), Galen Hall (40th-$20,324), Brendon Rubie (36th-$24,041), Andrew Weisner (33rd-$24,041), Randy Lew (32nd-$24,041) and Alex Kravchenko (31st-$24,041) were all among the early eliminations.

During the midday levels, the eliminations continued as Cary Katz (29th-$24,041), Eric Cloutier (28th-$24,041), Sam Chartier (26th-$28,793), Micah Raskin (24th-$28,793), Andrew Lichtenberger (23rd-$28,793), Jeremy Ausmus (21st-$28,793), Thiago “xTHEDECANOx” Nishijima (18th-$35,003) and Jason Wheeler (17th-$35,003) all took their leave.

Not long after, Daniel Perper opened to 42,000 from early position and action folded around to Joseph Cheong in the small blind, who announced he was all in for about 440,000 total. Directly behind him in the big, Kyle Julius also announced he was all in. Perper tanked, but eventually decided to fold and hands between Cheong and Julius were revealed.

Cheong: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Julius: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

The {9-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop looked good for Cheong, however, the {6-Spades} turn and {8-Clubs} river would give Julius a runner-runner straight to send Cheong home in 15th place ($43,095).

After a few more eliminations, a sick hand occurred when action folded to Dan Smith in the hijack and he raised to 65,000. Erik Aude then three-bet to 150,000 in the small blind, the big folded, and Smith made the call, bringing about the {4-Hearts}{3-Spades}{A-Spades} flop.

Aude proceeded to check-call a bet of 100,000 before checking the {K-Hearts} turn. Smith kept the pressure on with a bet of 220,000, but this time Aude woke up with a check-raise to 500,000. Smith made the call and then snap-called when Aude moved all in for about 660,000 on the {9-Clubs} river.

Aude rolled over {K-Spades}{K-Clubs} for a set, but it was no good against Smith's {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} set of aces. It was a monster pot, and Smith took right around 3,000,000 million to the final table.

Speaking of the final table, the final nine players played through the night with four of them hitting the rail along the way:

Late Night Double for Julius

Posted 2012-07-01 GMT-6

Dan Smith raised to 225,000 from the small blind and Kyle Julius defended from the big. When the flop fell {7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, Smith led out for 300,000 and Julius moved all in for 2.115 total.

Smith asked for a count, assessed what it'd do to his stack, and then hit the tank. During this time he eyed Julius, who broke out a smile. "I can't help but laugh," he said, much to the amusement of the rail. Julius chatted with the crowd a bit, inquiring what event he could play tomorrow if he were to bust. Smith's rail even chimed in, prompting their man to say, "Come on guys," with a hint of frustration in his voice.

A few moments later, Smith made the call.

Showdown
Julius: {Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Smith: {A-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

Julius was ahead with a pair of sevens, but Smith had a gut-shot straight draw to go with his ace. The {9-Diamonds} turn added a flush draw to Smith's out, but the {4-Clubs} river would not complete any of them. With that, Julius doubled right before the end of the night.

Smith Scoops a Large One

Posted 2012-07-01 GMT-6

Panayote Vilandos completed from the small blind and Dan Smith raised to 300,000. Vilandos called to see a flop, which came {10-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{J-Spades}.

Vilandos checked and Smith continued with his aggression and fired 400,000 into the middle. Vilandos called.

Both players checked the {Q-Diamonds} turn, however, when Vilandos checked the {8-Hearts} river, Smith made a modest 300,000 bet. Vilandos called and Smith tabled {Q-Spades}{4-Spades} for a pair of queens. Vilandos revealed {K-Spades}{J-Clubs} for a pair of jacks and mucked.

Kevin Schulz Eliminated in 4th Place ($267,792)

Kevin Schulz

Action folded around to Kevin Schulz on the button and he moved all in for around 900,000. Kyle Julius folded from the small blind, but Panayote Vilandos decided to make the call from the big.

Showdown
Schulz: {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Vilandos: {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}

"Six," Schulz's supporters cried from the rail, knowing their man needed to come from behind. While the flop brought a six, the {6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} was disastrous for Schulz as Vilandos made trips. The former was up out of his seat and collecting his thing even before the {7-Clubs} was put out on the turn, officially leaving him drawing dead. The {7-Spades} was run out on the river for good measure, and Schulz became our fourth-place finisher.

Derek Gregory Eliminated in 5th Place ($197,691)

Derek Gregory - 5th place
Derek Gregory - 5th place

In what would be his last hand, Derek Gregory opened to 165,000 from the cutoff and was called by Dan Smith in the big blind.

The flop came {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Smith checked to Gregory, who c-bet for 225,000. Smith then check-raised all in and Gregory quickly called all in for his last 1.3 million.

Smith: {J-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Gregory: {9-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Gregory was ahead, but would need to fade plenty of outs to survive. The {K-Clubs} turn gave Smith an open-ended straight draw and the {A-Hearts} left Smith with a winning straight for the knockout.

Smith is up to 6.7 million.

Vilandos Takes Some from Smith

Posted 2012-07-01 GMT-6

Panayote Vilandos raised to 165,000 from the small blind and Dan Smith defended from the big. When the flop fell {K-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, Vilandos bet 250,000, Smith called and the {5-Spades} was put out on the turn. Again Vilandos bet, this time 350,000, and again Smith called.

The {6-Clubs} river didn't slow Vilandos down as he bet out 860,000, but it proved to much as Smith folded. A few hands later, the duo tangle again, and Vilandos managed to come out on top for a second time, taking an additional 500,000 from Smith.

Vilandos Can't Call

Posted 2012-07-01 GMT-6

Kyle Julius opened to 135,000 from the small blind and Panayote Vilandos called from the big to see a flop, which came {5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

Julius led out for 140,000, to which Vilandos responded by raising to 525,000 total. Undeterred, Julius quickly announced he was all in for about 1.85 million on top. Vilandos tanked and eventually revealed a {5-} for top pair and mucked his hand.
