Victorian Championships Preview...Next Stop Crown Casino

After a hugely successful Melbourne Poker Championships, which saw James Broom take home the Main Event worth $134k, all eyes in the Australian poker community are now well and truly focused on the Victorian Poker Championships to be held in August.

Crown Poker have released a mouth-watering schedule of events, commencing with a $230 NL Holdem 2 day event which will be sure to attract big numbers, through to the big one – the $2,700 NL Holdem Main Event. Like the Melbourne Champs, the Main Event will consist of 2 Day 1 Flights, and conclude with Day 2 on Sunday the 17th.

One of the major attractions of the series will be the innovative State of Origin Feature Event. 6 members, from 6 different states (VIC, NSW, SA, QLD, WA and TAS) will duke it in 6 first round shootouts, with one player from each state trying to win their heat to make their way to the final table. Points will be awarded for finishing positions in the shootouts as well as at the final table, with prizemoney awarded to the first 3 place finishers, as well as all members of the winning state. State rivalry has never been this big!

As always, No Limit Holdem lovers are more than looked after with no less than 10 events with the variety players have come to expect from Crown. Rebuy, 6 handed, Ladies, Teams, PokerPro and the Crown-famous Terminator events all return for another series. Buyins have also been set up to appeal to everyone regardless of the size of your bankroll – from $220 for the PokerPro event and $230 for Event 1, to the 2 $10,200 events – the High Stakes Holdem, and the Winner Take All $100k Challenge.

One of the criticisms the more experienced players have is the absence of the different forms of poker with the explosion of No Limit Holdem. Such players will be pleased to see a range of different events set down for the Vic Champs. Crazy Pineapple, Razz, 7 Card Stud, H.O.R.S.E., Omaha – there's at least one event on all of these disciplines to suit the most adaptable of players. However – if Limit Holdem is your specialty, you’re resigned to the H.O.R.S.E. event – unfortunately there is no Limit Holdem event in the schedule.

The Victorian Championships are also the next chance to score some big points for the PokerNetwork Australasian Rankings Leader Board, currently headed by Robert Wang on the back of two big results at this year's Aussie Millions and a tournament win in New Zealand. He's by no means out of reach however – High Stakes victor Sam Youssef and Main Event champion James Broom both rocketed up the ladder with their wins at the Melbourne Championships. Who knows – get yourself to the Vic Champs and you might be the next player storming up the PAR leader board?
