2008 APPT Sydney Day 2: Gray Dominates; Griffin and Nelson Well Placed

Posted at 02:07 2008-12-04
The second day of the 2008 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Sydney Grand Final saw a healthy field of 172 players hit the felt at Star City Casino for their chance at the $1 million first place prize.

It was considered to be the toughest flight of the event by many, with the likes of Gavin Griffin, Lee Nelson, Andrew Scott, Raymond Rahme, Mark Vos, Jamie Pickering, Eric Assadourian, Terrence Chan, Billy Argyros, Gary Benson, Jai Kemp, Jonathan Karamalikis and the defending 2007 APPT Sydney Champion Grant Levy all making an appearance.

It didn’t take long for the action to heat up. In fact the very first hand saw our first elimination and first double up! Unbelievably Martin Comer succumbed when his pocket queens ran into the trip sevens of Moe Toaube. Comer was first out the door after one hand of play as Toaube was the early chip leader with a double stack of 40,000!

After the early fireworks play settled down and returned to a normal deep stacked poker pace. Grant Levy had a rough day and was an early casualty while Jason Gray emerged as a man to watch. He cemented his place at the top of the leaderboard after a huge clash with Nathanael Seet. Gray had called a raise with a creative {8d}{5d} and turned a straight to crack the pocket queens of Seet. Gray collected the massive pot to hold more than double the chips of the next best player!

He carried that form and his stack through until the end of the day to hold a huge lead into day two on Friday. PokerStars Pro Gavin Griffin made a late surge to end the day in second in chips, with the likes of Mark Vos, Lee Nelson, Sam Korman, Emanuel Seal, Assadour & Eric Assadourian and Marlon Goonawardana all ending the day well placed amongst the 72 survivors.

The top ten chip stacks when the players bagged and tagged were:

Jason Gray - 184,000
Gavin Griffin - 134,700
Vince Ha - 123,800
Christopher Lee - 95,900
Tom McLaughlin - 90,500
Andrew Meldrum - 81,500
Alexander Soderlund - 80,600
Manuel Hansimikali - 78,800
Tom Rafferty - 74,100
Marlon Goonawardana - 73,600
