The highly anticipated 2008 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Sydney Grand Final had finally arrived upon the doorstep on Star City Casino with 108 players hitting the felt for Day 1a action. While this figure was down on last year’s numbers, there are already over 400 registrations with many more expected to front the registration desk over the coming days.
Today’s field include many of Australia’s finest players and a sprinkling of international talent. The highest profile players in the field were Team PokerStars Pros Chad Brown and Vanessa Rousso. They share mixed fortunes with Brown surging to the early tournament lead while Rousso was an early casualty. However Brown slid during the day and eventually succumbed to New Zealand’s Phil Willcocks with Brown’s two pair falling to a bigger two pair.
Other notables in the field were several of Australia’s finest online poker talent including James “Andy McLEOD” Obst, Jay “Seabeast” Kinkade, Steve “StevoL” Leonard, Jarred “FlopNutsOnYou” Graham and Tony “Bond18” Dunst. However it would be a rough day for the online phenoms with Dunst the only one to see Day 2 action.
Play was subdued for most of the day with players enjoying the 75 minute levels and 20,000 start banks, however by the day’s end the field has been reduced to 46 players who will return on Friday for Day 2 action. Willcocks continued his impressive run to claim the end of day chip lead, ahead of Steven Musca and the UK’s Daniel Kowalski.

A highly anticipated final saw Emad Tahtouh and Tony Hachem bust out early, but in the end Sam Youssef came through with the victory to claim his third major Australian title of the year. This win puts Youssef well clear in the PokerNetwork Australasian Rankings award and unless we see a special performance by someone in the Main Event, Youssef has one hand on the crown!
