2011 WSOP Schedule Announced

Posted at 08:44 2011-01-28

If you’ve got a spare seven weeks this winter and a few spare hundred G’s laying around the house, then you may be interested to hear about the 2011 World Series of Poker (WSOP) schedule which was announced this week.

The 2011 WSOP will kick off on May 31st with 58 gold bracelet events crammed into the schedule as the pinnacle of the game of poker. Despite rumours of a potential move, the WSOP will once again be hosted at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Last year the $50,000 Player’s Championship kicked off proceedings with a bang, with Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi claiming an amazing victory in what would be a memorable WSOP campaign. However this year, that event has been bumped to the end of the schedule, just prior to the Main Event. Instead, the first open tournament of the schedule will be a brand new $25,000 Heads-up No Limit Holdem Championship. This event is capped at 256 players and will no doubt produce one of the toughest fields ever seen.

Other new events include a $2,500 10-Game Six-Handed event that includes Badugi for the first time. There’s also a new $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha Six-Handed Event as well as five $1,000 No Limit Holdem donk-fests.

The Amazon and Pavilion Rooms at the Rio will be filled to the brim on July 7th when the $10,000 Main Event kicks off. Last year it was PokerStars’ Jonathan Duhamel who became Canada’s first Main Event champion as he won nearly $9 million in prize money.

In 2011, the November Nine concept will return with the Main Event set to pause at the final nine on July 19th. The survivors will then return to finish what they started on November 5th.

The other major change, which is pleasing for players and media alike, is that hard stop times will be in effect for the duration of the 2011 schedule. The maximum length of a day will be ten levels, regardless of the number of players remaining. This applies to restarts and final tables. After ten levels play will stop and return at 3:00pm, which means some final tables will extent over two days.
