Seventy-Six players made their way to the SKYCITY Auckland Casino just after midday to battle down until just a final table of nine remained. With just over fifty players needing to fall until the money was reached, action was relatively fast as Souny Frederic was awarded the unwanted title of bubble boy. Coming back from a break, Frederic opted to miss the first hand, and was forced all in on the following hand. He had to sit back as both players in the blinds, Cole Swannack and Monica Eastick checked down the board. Swannack tabled a pair of fours with the , which defeated the of Frederic.
After Frederic fell in 25th place, the line at the payout desk began to grow. Hoshy Patel (20th), Michael Guzzardi (17th), Angie Fitzgerald (16th), Cole Swannack (12th) and Jason Lee (11th) were some of those to finish in the money, but fail to reach the final table.
Andre Nunes-Carreira’s hopes of making the final table fell short by just one when he bubbled in 10th place. After Slav Sheynin limped into the pot, Nunes-Carreira moved all in for 300,000 in chips and was called by Mulligan. Sheynin folded, leaving Nunes-Carreira's against Mulligan’s . When the board of didn’t improve his hand, Nunes-Carreira was sent to the rail.
Mulligan is a local resident and used a great run of cards, patience and plenty of skill to amass a his stack. Firstly, he doubled through Nunes-Carreira, when his out-flopped the . He then eliminated Jason Lee and finished off Nunes-Carreira in the final hand of the night, adding a valuable 300,000 to his already impressive stack. Behind him, Pravin Harji trails by a whopping 400,000 chips, while start-of-the-day chip leader Xiaodong Xia is one of the short stacks heading to the final table.
Throw in an Australian and several locals, including the one-and-only Graeme “Kiwi G” Putt, and picking the eventual winner is still still anyone's guess, but Mulligan does have the big edge to begin with. First place is worth NZ$107,640.
