2013 APPT Macau Day 1a: Charles Lum Leads the Way

The first day of play at the 2013 PokerStars.net APPT Macau Main Event wrapped up Wednesday night. Seven 60-minute levels were played on Day 1a, and the field that came out totalled 184 players. Heading the pack at the end of the day was Charles Lum with 158,500 in chips.

Lum took the lead in the last few hands of the night when the other big stacks started to move in the other direction. Some of those other big stacks include Matt Carter (154,100) and Nan Hong (149,300), who was involved in one of the biggest hands of the day.

In Level 7 with the blinds at 400/800/100, a player in middle position raised to 1,600. Ted Wang and Minh Nguyen made the call, then Hong three-bet to 4,000 from the button. All three players called, and the flop fell {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{5-Diamonds}. The middle-position player led out for 13,000, Wang moved all in for 50,000, Nguyen folded, and Hong called all in for 44,400. The middle-position player also called in for 41,100, and the hands were tabled.

The player in middle position had the {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}, Wang held the {A-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, and Hong had the {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}. The turn was river were the {10-Clubs} and {10-Hearts}, winning Hong the pot.

Other notables coming out to play on Day 1a were Liam O’Rourke, Jason Lee, Ivan Zalac, Trung Tran, Nick Wong and Dinesh Alt. They'll all be moving on to Day 2 and enjoy a day off on Thursday.

Some of the players who failed to make it through the day were Oliver Speidel, Sparrow Cheung, Mishel Anunu, Aaron Lim, Michael Kanaan, Celina Lin, Jae Kyung Sim, Vincent Rubianes and Ryan Hong.

Day 1b will kick off on Thursday at 3 p.m. local time here in Macau. The magnificent City of Dreams and PokerStars Macau will be the host once again as an expected field of around 250 or so players will be out in full force.
