Affleck Leads WSOP Day 4; Puzz, Neilson, Shou and Hachem Still In Contention

Posted at 14:00 2009-07-13
Day four of the World Series of Poker Main Event would see 789 players, including 17 Australians, return to the Amazon Room. The atmosphere was tense from the very start of the day with 648 set to make at least US$21,365 for a cash result, and the rest to go home empty-handed with nothing but a story to tell.

16 of those Aussies would make the money, and 14 of them are still alive heading into day five. Of the Aussies eliminated, Robert Jackson would fall just short of the money, while Paren Arzoomanian would score US$23,196 for a 511th placed finish. Melbournian Robert Campbell would not be far behind him, exiting in 477th place for US$25,027.

Sydney-siders dominate the remaining Aussies left in the Main Event, with seven of the 14 left standing, including the top five hailing from the harbour city.

Charlie Elias is the best placed Aussie currently fifth in the chip counts with 1,540,000 in chips. He sits just 279,000 chips behind current chip leader Matt Affleck. Also over one million in chips is Tian Shou with 1,042,000. Both Elias and Shou are well placed to follow in the footsteps of Joe Hachem should fortune smile on them.

They may have to contend with the real deal yet. Australia’s only ever Main Event winner in Hachem is still alive and kicking, sitting just above average at 490,000 in chips.

The other Aussies above the average chip stack of 478,673 include Joey Lawrence (878,000), Sarne Lightman (865,000), Daniel Neilson (721,000) and Dave Fox (568,000).

At current 407 players are still in contention to win the Main Event. As mentioned, PokerStars qualifier Matt Affleck is currently chipleader with 1,819,000 in chips. Currently second is Ludovic Lacay, who has 1,608,000 chips. Some high profile players are still lurking with Phil Ivey (1,276,000) and Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (1,250,000) well poised.
