ANZPT Auckland Day 1c: Amant Nauhria Leads, 105 Into Day 2

The final opening flight of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) Auckland Main Event was upon us at the SKYCITY Auckland Casino as 103 players took to the felt to create a NZ$426,000 prizepool that saw the eventual champion set to take home NZ$110,760 in prizemoney.

Although the SKYCITY Auckland poker room is on the small side compared to other rooms in the Asia Pacific region, today it reached its capacity as the 103 players that took a seat took the total entrants to 213 – a small increase on the 207 from last year. Many notables managed to join the previous 110 players as the likes of New Zealander’s Jackson Zheng, Paul Hockin and WSOP bracelet winner Simon Watt were joined by Iori Yogo, Bryan Huang, David Gorr and Tom Grigg.

ANZ Player of the Year runner-up Luke Brabin would be delivered a cooler early courtesy of Tom Grigg when both players turned a straight. Grigg however turned the nut straight to Brabin’s smaller straight and he was sent to the rail. It would then be Zheng’s turn to be on the end of a cooler when he called all-in with {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} on a {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{9-Spades}{4-Spades} board only to run into an opponent’s {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}.

Unfortunately for early chip leader Grigg, he would also head to the rail after losing {A-}{8-} to {Q-}{Q-} while Gorr and Hockin would also find themselves eliminated as 50 players survived the day with Amanat Nauhria bagging the chip lead with an impressive 107,200 – enough for the overall chip lead.
