ANZPT Perth Main Event Kicks Off Today!

Posted at 09:35 2012-05-02 by Barry Gallagher

Things are usually hot in Perth and it will be no different this week in the luxurious surrounds of the casino in the Burswood Entertainment Complex. While we’re sure the powers that be will have the air conditioning on, it will be hard to cool down the tension as hundreds of thousands of dollars will be on the line as the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour rolls into town.

Perth is the second stop of this season’s Pokerstars.com ANZPT following on from the successful first leg in Sydney where Scotland’s Gordon Huntly took home the trophy and $226,000. Wednesday marks the start of the $1,100 + $100 main event which will continue until a winner is crowned on Sunday. There will be two Day 1’s on Wednesday and Thursday and it will be interesting to see how close to the 400 player cap the western capital draws.

The event this year is the most affordable in the history of ANZPT Perth and the hope of the organisers will be to attract a big field and Pokerstars has already managed to qualify over 100 satellite winners online. Add in the live tournament regulars and hopefully some eager locals and we could be in for a large turnout.

Last year, ANZPT Perth drew 220 players for a $2,200 main event which generated a prize pool of $500,600. Well known Australian pro Grant Levy took the event down to add $131,500 to his lifetime live tournament earnings of over USD$1.6 million. In 2010, the very first ANZPT Perth had a $2,500 buy-in and it was another big name on the Australian poker scene that brought home the bacon. Pokerstars Pro Tony Hachem won the event for a $132,750 score that was his first major main event victory on the live scene.

Winning ANZPT Perth would be a feather in the cap of any poker player and the action should be fast and frantic. We had a cracker in Sydney when young Liam O’Rourke drove the action on the way to a second place finish and we hope for a similar exciting event this time.
