ANZPT Player of Year Race Heats Up in Darwin

Posted at 11:38 2010-10-23

The second season of the PokerStars.net Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) may be finishing up in a few days, but our friends in the “Top End” are in for one helluva tournament as the ANZPT Player of the Year race is set for a thrilling conclusion.

From Monday, October 25, major tournament poker makes its debut at the SKYCITY Darwin casino, with the $2,200 ANZPT Darwin Main Event kicking off at 12.30pm local time. In all, six events are scheduled throughout the series, including three $550 events (No Limit Hold’em, NLHE Teams Event and a NLHE Turbo event), a $340 Pot Limit Omaha event and finishing up with a $3,300 NLHE High Stakes Single Table Challenge on Saturday, October 30.

Of course, it’s not just about the action on the felt, with some of the best tourism packages we’ve seen on offer for all PokerStars qualifiers. For those who hit the rail early, they’ll be able to take in all the sights and sounds of the city, take a cruise out on the bay, check out the native flora and fauna of the Territory or Litchfield National Parks, or for that ultimate getaway after a tilt-inducing bust-out, hop into a 4WD and lose themselves in Kakadu National Park during a two-day camping safari, exploring the true Aussie outback.

However, everybody’s talking about the ANZPT Player of the Year race, which is hotter than high noon in the Simpson Desert. John Maklouf is out in front at the moment with 203.8 points, but 2010 ANZPT Adelaide runner-up Andrew Scarf is breathing down his neck, sitting on 202.65 points.

Team PokerStars Pro Tony Hachem will be even more determined to make it back-to-back POTY titles, currently in third position with 191.65 (just 12.15 points behind Maklouf), while 2009 APPT Grand Final champion Aaron Benton and 2010 ANZPT Adelaide champion Rennie Carnevale, along with the in-form Mike Spilkin and Ricky Kroesen are all still within striking range.

And to the victor go the spoils, with the 2010 ANZPT Player of the Year to receive a $55,000 sponsorship package from PokerStars.net, with flights and accommodation to four Season 5 Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) events, as well as a seat in either the 2011 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in The Bahamas, or the 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event!

The POTY runner-up will win a $25,000 Season 3 ANZPT Sponsorship package (including entry to five events, flights and accommodation) while third place will score a $10,000 PokerStars.net sponsorship package.

With so much on the line and so little separating these contenders, the ANZPT Season 2 finale in Darwin is shaping up to be the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny! Online qualifiers are running online now at PokerStars and for more information log onto www.anzpt.com.
