APPT Cebu Main Event Day 1A: Ivan Zalac is the man to catch

Posted at 10:00 2013-05-02 by Matthew Pitt

Day 1A of the PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Cebu Main Event is in the bag after a brief but action-packed day of poker action at the Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino.

Play began at noon and was finished by 18:30, during which time 81 players bought in and just over half of those busted out. The player who bagged up the most chips was Ivan Zalac, which earns him the title of overnight chip leader.

Zalac somehow managed to turn his 20,000-starting stack into a most impressive 109,100 over the course of six one-hour levels. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Zalac has put in some impressive results so far in 2013, reaching the money in no fewer than seven major live events. Zalac’s latest cash came in the first event of the APPT Cebu festival where he finished 6/122 for a PHP69,200 score (approx. AUD$1,635).

Hot the Zalac’s heels is another man in from, Trung Tran. If Tran’s name rings a bell inside your head it is because he won the recent Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines Main Event for US$124,000. Can he win back-to-back tournaments in this beautiful country?

Other notable players who progressed to Friday’s Day 2 include British pro and Asia regular Sam Razavi (42,200), Razavi’s fellow Brit Stephen Chidwick (22,000) and Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang (19,800).

Among the 41 players who registered but failed in their quest to make it through to Day 2 include the former APPT Cebu champion Vivian Im, Dan “djk123” Kelly, David Borg and the 2012 Asia Player of the Year Yosuke Sekiya.

Day 1B commences at 12:00 local time and will continue until six one-hour levels have been completed. You can follow all of the action over on the PokerNetwork Live Reporting pages or by tuning into these pages tomorrow where we will recap the action.
