While the eyes of the poker world are currently fixated on the goings on in Barcelona where the 10th season of the PokerStars European Poker Tour is in full swing, the PokerStars live events team are busy preparing for the upcoming Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Melbourne Main Event that kicks off on Friday.
The APPT Melbourne festival, taking place at the fantastic Crown Casino, has been running since August 25 according to the official schedule, but it is the $3,000 buy-in APPT Melbourne Main Event that is the flagship tournament on that busy and intensive schedule.
It will be the third time in the APPT’s seven-season history that the APPT has had a stop in Melbourne. In July 2011, APPT Melbourne was the first stop of Season 5 and saw 260 players buy in for $5,000. The lion’s share of the $1,222,000 prize pool, $330,000 to be exact, found its way into the bankroll of the Australian poker legend Leo Boxell.
Boxell defeated New Zealand’s Phillip Willcocks heads-up to scoop the huge prize that year, despite trailing by more than 3-to-1 in chips early on in the one-one-one battle. We would expect Boxell to be in Melbourne for the 2013 edition of the APPT Melbourne Main Event.
Last year, the APPT Melbourne Main Event attracted a crowd of 257 players through to doors of the Crown Casino, all of whom were outlasted by the eccentric British pro Sam Razavi. A regular in the Asia and Pacific regions, Razavi scooped the largest cash of his career when he defeated a star-studded final table that housed the likes of Brendon Rubie, Kristian Lunardi, James Bills, Gary Benson, Tom Grigg and Razavi’s heads-up opponent Keith Walker. Razavi’s prize was an impressive $326,125.
The latest instalment of this exciting tournament opens its doors on Friday 6 September, with the final table playing out on Monday 9 September. The PokerNews Live Reporting team is covering the Main Event and we have a feed through to the PokerNetwork blog where you can follow all of the action from.
Looking at the PokerStars lobby, there are still some satellites running for the APPT Melbourne Main Event but these must end soon. At first glance it looks as if the satellites end on September 5, so act quickly if you want to bag yourself a seat to what should be a spectacular event.
