Aussie Millions Day 1b - Brett Daphne Grabs Chip Lead

Posted at 02:14 2009-01-20
Monday saw all the action of Day 1b in the Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event. Coming to the felt were 201 eager and bright-eyed, bushy-tailed competitors and Ivan Demidov. Demidov spent much of the day a little under the weather; suffering what looked to be the tell-tale symptoms of a big night out. It didn’t stop the 2008 WSOP Main Event Runner Up charging up the chip counts though. Demidov would finish with about twice the average stack at 81,925.

Some other notable players were not as lucky to make the end of the day. Main Event journies ended for defending champion Alexander Kostritsyn, big name American players Erik Seidel and Chris Ferguson, along with local Australian notables like Emad Tahtouh, Sherif Derias, Jason Gray, Jeff Lisandro, and Tony 'Bond18' Dunst.

Around half of the field would be eliminated on the day, leaving 101 players to advance to Day 2 including chip leader Brett Daphne at 120,250 and notables like Michael 'Timex' McDonald (80,675), Manny Stavropoulos (57,925), Antonio Casale (56,275), Bruno Portaro (52,525), and Annette 'Annette_15' Obrestad (45,225).

Top Ten Chip Counts:

Brett Daphne - 120,250
Josh Malone - 112,400
Sam Vakili - 106,300
Michael Toreniec - 101,525
Ali Ghezelbash - 92,575
Erol Aygon - 92,100
Josh Onas - 89,700
Ivan Demidov - 81,925
Annica Zvert - 81,575
Michael 'Timex' McDonald - 80,675

Tuesday will see both Day 1c of the main event, along with the first flight of the $5,300 Australian Heads Up Hold’em Championships being run side-by-side. Players who made it through day 1a and day 1b of the Main Event will reconvene with those who make it through day 1c, on Wednesday to continue fighting it out for the biggest first prize in Aussie Millions history.
