Aussie Millions Main Event: Battle of the Titans on Day 2

Posted at 09:11 2011-01-27

It was a day of Tim Tams, Vegemite and Lamingtons as 265 players celebrated Australia Day by slugging it out on the felt of the Crown Poker Room on Day 2 of the 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event. The goal was to reach the money at the final 72 but when the end was brought to a close, they had fallen just short with 76 players surviving the day. There are going to be some nervous moments and four very disappointed people early on Day 3.

Day 2 kicked off with a clear "Table of Death" featuring Patrik Antonius, Phil Ivey and Howard Lederer, and we would certainly see some fireworks from this table as the day progressed. Local sporting stars Gary Ablett Jr and 888poker ambassador Shane Warne were still in contention as PokerNetwork's patriotic Lynn Gilmartin previewed the day ahead...

The chip leader entering Day 3 will be American Randy Dorfman who bagged up 581,000 but the talking point of the day was a huge clash between two titans of the game in Full Tilt Pros Patrik Antonius and Phil Ivey.

The two clashed on the action flop of {qc}{9s}{7s} with both holding relative monsters. Ivey was in the lead with {as}{qs} for top pair, top kicker and nut flush draw as Antonius found his outs slimmed with his {ts}{8s} for an open-ended straight-flush draw.

The turn was the offsuit {jd} that Antonius needed before the river bricked the {7h} to send the 400,000-chip pot to Antonius and leave Ivey crippled, and eliminated moments later.

Antonius reached the close of play with 428,500 and will be joined on Day 3 by fellow Full Tilt Pros Erick Lindgren (264,000) and Howard Lederer (181,500).

Others still in contention include Sorel Mizzi (489,000), Haibo Chu (431,000), Manny Rodrigues (386,500), Emanuel Seal (240,000), Mark Vos (203,00)), Matthew Kirk (198,500), Michael Matthews (175,500), Cliff Lee (154,000), Michael Guttman (150,500), Manny Stavropoulos (118,000), John Dalessandri (101,000), Nik Lackovic (97,000), Tamara Volkoff (57,000), Julius Colman (53,500) and Van Marcus (50,500).

However when play recommences all eyes will be on the four short stacks – Peter Wong (47,000), Karib Karib (42,500), Simon Morris (41,000) and Albert Albergo (31,500).
