With an opening ceremony featuring a rendition of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face and Joe Hachem uttering the immortal words, the 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event was officially under way! 191 players hit the felt for the opening flight with plenty of notables in the field including David Saab, John Hennigan, James Obst, Sorel Mizzi, Tony G, Raymond Rahme, Josh Field and Mark Vos.
The Main Event can’t be won on day one, but it can certainly be lost. Players were determined to make it through the day unscathed with Patrik Antonius, Noah Schwartz and Derek Cheung prominent but in the end 78 players survived the day with Chris Chronis grabbing the overnight chip lead.

Meanwhile fans gathered three-deep on the rail for the conclusion of the $100k High Rollers Challenge. Six players returned with David Steicke the unlikely chip leader. Play was slow in the early going but John Juanda was the first to bust after things just didn’t go his way during the day and was eliminated when he ran pocket jacks into trip queens of JC Tran. Bill Jordanou battled hard with the short stack but was eliminated as bubble boy in 5th place, when his pocket queens ran into the pocket kings of Steicke.
The late arriving Dan Shak was next to go after he pushed with {3c}{3d} but ran into the {7c}{7h} of Steicke. However it got worse for Shak when Steicke flopped quads to send Shak to the rail in 4th place.
David Steicke was controlling the table with relentless aggression had built a huge chip lead as play went three-handed. In the end JC Tran made a stand with his {Kc}{6d} but Steicke had him covered with his {Kd}{Jh}. The board bricked out {2c}{4h}{7c}{Ah}{8s} and we were heads up.
Steicke held a 10:1 chip lead and didn’t take long to wrap it up. The first all in clash saw Tony Bloom’s {Ac}{4s} up against Steicke’s {Ts}{3s}. The board ran out {6d}{7d}{7s}{6h}{Th} and Steicke gets there on the river to capture the title and $1,200,000 in prize money.
David Steicke - $1,200,000
Tony Bloom - $600,000
JC Tran - $300,000
Dan Shak - $200,000
