Aussies Online: From The Virtual Felt To The Live Arena

Posted at 22:50 2010-04-27

Another week on the virtual felt saw things quiet down a little with another stop on the ANZPT hitting Sydney and the Star City Casino.

With the majority of Australia's poker players in town to capture the lion's share of the hundreds and thousands on offer, it was no surprise to see the online volume decrease in favour of thirty-hands an hour, soul reading and mistake-ridden decisions that is the beauty of live poker.

While some of the online superstars were three-betting light, discussing equity and fumbling with their chips in the Star City poker room, online one young phenom managed to collect a respectable score after newly appointed Full Tilt Poker Red Pro Jonathan 'xMONSTERxDONGx' Karamalikis managed to best a 29-player field to pick up $116,000 for his ANZPT High Rollers Win.

Karamalikis did manage to take some time out and hit the computer picking up a few scores, but it was James 'Andy McLEOD' Obst's victory in Full Tilt's Friday Night Fight for $30,888 that was the biggest score for an Australian during the week.

After several years of playing live tournaments with much success - including a second-place finish in this year's Aussie Millions Opening Event - and a strong online record, Brendan 'Make It Rain' Edmonds finally registered on PocketFives recently and has already shot up to sit inside the top ten. Making an appearance for the ANZPT Sydney Main Event, Edmonds managed to log a first, third and fourth within a few days on Full Tilt's $18,500 GTD (1R+1A), $30,000 GTD and $24,000 GTD (Rebuy) for a combined $12,000-plus in earnings to add to his fourteen other cashes during the week.

PokerNetwork forum regular Benn 'risk2Dupside' Skender managed to log twenty-seven cashes this week including a victory in Full Tilt's $12,500 GTD for over $2,300 to see him sitting just outside the top twenty. Sal 'ugr italy' Fazzino picked up a second placing early in the week in the PokerStars $65,000 GTD for just over $11,000 before matching the same place in the PokerStars $109+R (6 Max) for just over $10,800 to add to his other nine cashes for the week.

bazooka87 managed to spike a victory in the PokerStars $30,000 GTD (1R+1A) for over $8,800 in a week that included sixteen cashes and five final tables. Callum 'c-biz-kid' Ford logged twenty-one cashes this week, which included nine final tables and wins in the PokerStars $12,000 GTD and Party Poker $10,000 GTD (Rebuy) for a week totalling just under $29,000 in earnings. Tim 'TurnRiva' Marsters collected a third in the PokerStars $55,000 GTD for $5,512 and Dean 'dinhjo' Nyberg managed a runner-up finish in the PokerStars $109 $40,000 GTD for just under $8,000.

The deepest Monday morning result went to Kiwi Damon "nomaddman" Lum who managed to finish 4th in the weekly iPoker major for a sweet $15,000 score.

With a short break until APPT Macau and the Melbourne Poker Championships, hopefully some justice will be shipped on the virtual felt in the weeks to come.
