Aussies Online: Big Scores in Soft Fields; The New Aussie Era has Begun!

Posted at 11:41 2011-04-19

With the poker world rocked by the events over the weekend which changed the landscape of online poker in the United States, it seems yesterday saw Australian players making a point to put their stamp on the online world, with one of the more memorable Monday mornings in recent times.

While most of the bigger tournaments across Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars would feature smaller fields to go along with the reduced guarantees, the general feeling was that games were definitely softer than in previous weeks, and the Aussie brigade made the most of it.

It was still a seven-figure guarantee Australia’s own Tim “weygang” English in the PokerStars Sunday Million as he weaved his way through the massive field for a big finish.

English would have 6,475 players standing between him and a victory and after all was said and done English would be part of the six-way deal that was struck on the final table. English would eventually finish in 4th place, but the deal would see him pocket the third highest score in the tournament, with $101,709 in winnings.

If it wasn’t for the huge success of English yesterday it would be Ben “CNT_CRUSHER” Delaney who would have all the headlines in the Aussie online poker world. Delaney could be seen taking not one or two victories, but a massive three wins yesterday. The first two victories would come on PokerStars, with a win in the $109 Turbo 2x Chance worth $11,726 while 1st place in the $109 Turbo 30k Guaranteed was worth $6,150. The next victory for Delaney would come in the $530 100k High Roller event on Party Poker, whereby a victory would send $28,620 Delaney’s way.

Ryan “rkruok” Nathan may not have taken down any big scores yesterday, but he best not despair as it was a massive week for Nathan who fell just shy of $100,000 in earnings over just two tournaments. Nathan would finish 3rd in last weeks Super Tuesday event for $41,030 while this score would be eclipsed just a short while after when a 2nd place in the $109 Rebuy $300,000 Guarantee would be good for $54,995. The two scores see Nathan soar up the Australian Online Rankings for April.

While English and Delaney dominated yesterday morning, there were a few other Aussies enjoying some success. Tim “TurnRiva” Marsters would outlast 620 players in the Sunday 500, finishing 4th in the event which featured a reduced $250,000 guaranteed prizepool. The score was good for $23,362 for Marsters, not bad for the initial $530 investment.

Over on Full Tilt Poker the FTOPS XX series got underway with Callum “c-biz-kid” Ford reaching the final table over a healthy field of 6,953 in Event #1, a $216 Multi-Entry No Limit Holdem event with $1 million guaranteed. Ford finished in 8th place and collected $20,580 for his efforts.

Jay “SEABEAST” Kinkade was another Aussie cashing in on the lack of American players, with a 1st place finish in the $109 Re-buy 40k Guarantee seeing $18,146 sent to Kinkade.

It was a good day for Sam “MILF ISLAND” Rotar, with two final tables seeing earnings of over $20,000 for the young Australian player. The first score came in the PokerStars $50 Re-buy for $7,668 while it was $13,965 for a 6th place finish in the Full Tilt Poker Sunday Brawl.

There were 1,377 players in attendance in a $109 event on PokerStars yesterday and it was Tom “winga699” Wing who came out too good for each and every one of them. After a little more than eight hours play Wing would go home with a nice $17,021 score.

As if yesterday wasn’t already an Aussie dominated poker world there was “dragula” who was seen taking 2nd place for $11,232 in the PokerStars Sunday Kickoff, while “harmsup” was busy taking home $14,980 in the Sunday Second Chance.

While online poker has been put on an indefinite hiatus for American poker players, it is business as usual for Aussies and it seems business has never been better. Be sure to keep your eyes on the PokerNetwork forums for all the latest sweats and bad beat stories, while Australian online poker players continue to put up the big scores and place their names in the record books.
