Aussies Online: Six Figure WCOOP Finish For Delaney

Posted at 14:52 2011-09-20

It was another big week at the virtual felt, what with the little tournament series known as the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker still in full gear and a slew of regular tournaments giving local players the opportunity to make some cold hard cash, and as usual they did not disappoint.

Making a WCOOP final table is no easy feat no matter which event it is achieved in, but it can be argued that the higher buy-in $1,050 event attracts a tougher field than the lower buy-in events and it is for this reason that Ben ‘delaney_kid’ Delaney must be commended for his gallant effort in WCOOP Event 28.

The event held a $600,000 guarantee which was easily smashed as 1146 entrants dished out the hefty buy-in to make for a $1,146,000 prizepool. The two-day event would see hard hitting action until there were only three remaining players, with Australia’s Delaney having to go toe-to-toe against two Austrian players in Schidly1984 and TheFan83.

When play reached three handed the tournament clock was paused as the Australian and the two Austrian players discussed a deal. When no deal could be made, play resumed and the action kicked into full swing again. It would take only a few orbits before this big hand took place. The action started with a min-raise from Schidly1984 and Delaney made the call from the big blind. Delaney then check-called a bet on a {9h}{6s}{3s} flop. When the {kh} hit the turn Delaney would again opt to check but would this time shove his stack all-in when Schidly1984 led. A call from Schidly1984 would see Delaney turn over {7s}{8h} for an open-ended straight, going up against two-pair, with Schidly1984 holding {kd}{9d}. Delaney needed help which would never come as the {as} on the river would send Delaney (below) to the rail in a respectable 3rd place and leave the title to be fought out by the Austrians.

WCOOP Event 28- $1,050 NL Hold’em (600k Guaranteed)
1st- Schildy1984- $206,280.00
2nd- TheFan83- $147,031.80
3rd- Ben ‘delaney_kid’ Delaney- $110,016.00
4th- d-mon-d- $82,512.00
5th- djibh- $57,300.00
6th- touchmynuts1- $45,840.00
7th- lindeyloo22- $34,380.00
8th- anguila- $22,920.00
9th- hithenose- $13,752.00

While Delaney’s score would be the biggest result for Aussies during the week’s WCOOP proceedings, there was still plenty of other action to be had around the regular tournament schedule.

Late in the week it was Ben ‘barcs69’ Barclay who fell just one spot short of a victory in the Party Poker $40k Friday Special, receiving $8,590 for his solid second place finish. It was earlier in the week that Ashton ‘myriddin’ Cartwright would be wrapping up a 1st place in the $109 NLHE Turbo event on PokerStars, with that score worth $6,259. Trent ‘Ahurazor’ Jones came close to securing a victory in the PokerStars Big $55, but would eventually fall in 2nd place to take home a healthy $14,157 score.

With only one week remaining at the 2011 WCOOP, there will be plenty of scrambling from Aussie grinders as they look to secure a big score and bring home the third gold bracelet of the year.
