What a difference a week makes.
This time last week we were trying to figure out whether some of the five figure scores rated high enough to get a mention against the backdrop of Aussies shipping sixers left and right. This week you could have sprayed the final table of the majority of tournaments on the card and not hit an Aussie. There were a couple of promising runs in the bigger tournaments, but they would all nearly all end in that bitter feeling of disappointment, cut short early into final tables, short of the big coin.
Andrew "Higher Wattage" Watson obviously didn't get the memo though. He grabbed a Triple Crown during the quiet week. He started the week with an $11,729 win in Full Tilt Poker's $33,000 Guaranteed Knockout event. He followed this up with a $4,930 win in the PokerStars $11 single rebuy and add on. Just to prove what good form he was in, he also shipped another PokerStars tournament on the same day, taking down first in the $5.50 rebuy. But he'd require a victory in the Ultimate Bet Sniper $20,000 Guaranteed to be crowned and that's how it went down, with him earning $5,509 for the win, and a Triple Crown icon on his profile page.
Falling just short of a trip to Triple Crown town was Benn “Risk2Dupside” Skender. The guy won a pair of tournaments at Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars on Wednesday that totalled $18,968 in prize money. He wasn’t able to turn a third victory from a third site within the seven day qualifying period though, so he falls short of joining the exclusive club for now.
One of Skender’s wins was in the PokerStars $30,000 Guaranteed, and it came at the expense of fellow Aussie David “dasve798111” Allan. Allan can count himself a little unlucky after copping a pair of runner up finishes on the same day, settling for second best in the PokerStars $30k guaranteed and the PokerStars double chance, that saw him take home around $11,000 on the day, but it could have been more had he been able to turn them into wins.
As if sending a nice little message to the haters Stewart “Juzlearnin” Scott popped up for an online win on UltimateBet. The 2009 Aussies Millions Main Event winner took down $15,000 for first in an overlaid $50,000 guaranteed tournament over there.
But for the most part it was a sleepy week on the Aussie online scene, as the big names enjoyed some hard earned rest, and the rest of us picked up the pieces of our shattered bankrolls post-SCOOP and FTOPS. It won’t stay sleepy for long though, this Friday sees the World Series of Poker gearing up and plenty of our Aussie online stars will be making the pilgrimage to poker’s big one. Let’s hope they can pull out a couple of results and do the country proud!
You have the opportunity to join them for free simply by checking out the PokerNetwork online poker tab and signing up to your next room through our poker room links. From there participate in our exclusive freeroll tournaments, big a package and it’s off to Vegas. Easy game.
