Duff’s Lock of the Week: Titanic Plunge

It’s been a while since i’ve written up a lock of the week, but we’ll get back to it this weekend.

I’m liking the Titans at the even money quote if you can get it and would even bet them at $1.95 tonight against the Brisbane Broncos. The Titans will be on the road, not that it is a big trip up the motorway or anything, but we’re talking about two teams who are in very situations at the moment.

In my opinion this one comes down to the punters reading far too much into the inconsistent results that occur every year during rep season. Sure the Titans struggled to an unconvincing victory over Newcastle last weekend. The Broncos on the other hand were emphatic storming to glory over a Storm team who had stuff all to play for.

In my mind, it changes nothing.

Change the results from last weekend a bit and your looking at a Titans team opening around a $1.70. I just don’t get how the public can take anything out of the Broncos-Storm game.

There are a few negative signs from the Titans side of the coin though. Rumours persist that both Scott Prince and Preston Campbell are trying to shake off injuries. Both are set to lineup though, and if you watched the Titans last weekend I wouldn’t be worrying about Scott Prince who was dominant against the Knights. Clinton Toopi may be a notable absence from the Gold Coast side.

Bigger still for the Broncos is the fact that first-choice halfback Peter Wallace returns to the team along with team-mates Antonio Winterstein, Matt Gillett and Nick Kenny. The Broncos are definitely on the improve as far as their team strength goes.

Still the Titans are a side who have been very impressive this season and rate among the favourites for the premiership. They have come off some big wins over Manly and Penrith in recent weeks, teams who are far above the talent of the Brisbane team. The Broncos on the other hand have been poor, and if you take their win last week out of the frame you would have to think the Titans are favourites for this.

They are not the favourites though, and are hovering around the even money mark on most books. I just can’t pass this up and will be having a play on this.
