In light of the recent casino closures by the Russian Government and the turmoil it has created for not just for poker, but the entire gaming industry, PokerStars has had to seek an alternate venue for its Soviet leg of the European Poker Tour (EPT).

With the assistance of the Ukrainian Poker Federation, in association with the Ukrainian Ministry of Youth, Family and Sport, PokerStars will host the first “EPT Kiev Sports Poker Championship”. Replacing the Russian Poker Open that was to be held at the Radisson SAS Slavyanskaya, this poker tournament is expected to produce the largest field assembled in Ukrainian history.

PokerStars has taken steps to ensure that their online qualifiers are catered for – all packages for the original Moscow event have now been converted into EPT Kiev packages, which includes their buy-in and accommodation. However, for those unable to participate due to the changes, they will be credited for entry into another EPT event or receive monetary compensation.

The PokerStars EPT Kiev Sports Poker Championship will be held at the Kiev Sports Palace from August 18 – 23, 2009 and kicks off the sixth season of the successful European Poker Tour. The buy-in for this event is €5,000 (AUD $8,687).

Further information for this event can be found at the PokerStars EPT website with online satellites underway at PokerStars.
