Flourentzou Leads Day 1a of Vic Champs Main Event!
Posted at 02:32 2009-08-15
The big one has finally arrived! The Main Event of the 2009 Victorian Poker Championships attracted a very respectable 156 players for the opening flight with many of the nation’s best players forking over $2,700 for their shot at a place in the Australian poker history books.
Some of the notables in attendance were 2005 World Champion Joe Hachem, and brother Tony who was recently crowned ANZPT Player of the Year. We had defending champ Jay “SEABEAST” Kinkade amongst a sea of online gurus including Tim Horan, Kristian Lunardi, Joel Dodds, Johnathan Karamalikis, Ben Delaney, Matthew Pearson and Daniel Kochan.
Other notables in the field were WSOP bracelet winner Mark Vos and ANZPT champs Karl Krautschneider, Danny Chevalier and Scott Kerr.
Andrew Scott was the first to go, making it back-to-back wooden spoons after his early elimination from the ANZPT Queensland event last week. Set over set will do it even when 500BB’s deep! He was soon followed by Dave Lee, George Mamacas and Brendon Rubie as the bustouts continued at a rapid pace throughout most of the day.
Kinkade wasn’t able to make it back-to-back titles after his set of fours fell to the rivered flush of another previous Victorian Championships Main Event winner in Mike Ivin. While Ben Delaney way happy to gamble away his stack in an attempt to get to “100k or Bust!”
However the day belonged to the old guard with the likes of Gary Benson, Jason Gray, Aytunc Tezay, Bill Jordanou and Leo Boxell all having strong days on the felt to progress to Day 2 in good shape.
The story of the day was George Flourentzou who gave Julian Powell some grief on his way to the end of day chip lead with 154,700 as 57 players survived the day’s action to progress through to Day 2 on Sunday.
Here’s the top ten chip counts when the chips were bagged and tagged:
