There were rumours circulating that Full Tilt were on the verge of announcing something big, and it doesn’t get much bigger than this.
Overnight Full Tilt announced the launch of the Onyx Cup – a series of high-stakes live poker tournaments throughout the world that will give poker’s elite the opportunity to play against each other for an estimated $30 million prizepool. The Onyx Cup will set a new standard as the biggest and best high-stakes poker tournament series the world has ever seen.
This ground-breaking series will be held in the United States, Europe and Asia with the first of six planned events for 2011 kicking off on May 11th in Las Vegas. Buy-ins will be between $100,000-$300,000 with the Grand Finale set to be a whopping $250,000 with an additional $1 million of added value.
Points will be awarded at each of the events with the top points earner across the series crowned the inaugural Onyx Cup champion. Not only will they go down in history as one of poker’s elite players but they will also drive away in a brand new luxury sports car.
The series will attract the best players in the world with all of the Full Tilt stable set to compete.
"It's not just about the money in this event," commented the world's number one player in Full Tilt Pro Phil Ivey. "It's more about playing with the calibre of players that we're going to be up against. You know, playing against the best players, and a lot of these guys here at the table are my friends and we're friendly but we're also super competitive against each other. There's going to be a lot of pride that comes along with winning this event."
When asked whether the event was a surprise to them or only just a matter of time with the way buy-ins have been increasing, the all-time leading tournament money earner, Erik Seidel said, "I do think it's a natural progression because there's so much money around and people are playing for such high stakes that it was inevitable. I think Full Tilt Poker was the only online organization that could pull this off because they have all the best players in the world."
