Full Tilt Poker Set to Break Guinness World Record

Posted at 13:30 2009-07-18
Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars have quite a rivalry going when it comes to being the lead dog in the online poker world. That rivalry is set to reach a new level this weekend with Full Tilt making a cheeky attempt to surpass a record set by PokerStars late last year.

Full Tilt Poker have announced they will host a tournament on the weekend catering to more then 35,000 players in the hopes of breaking the official Guinness World Record for Largest Online Poker Tournament. To so they will need to attract more then the 35,000 player mark set by PokerStars in their Guinness World Record tournament held at the end of the December 2008.

The tourney will be held Monday July 20 at 5:05am AEST. It will be the perfect way for Full Tilt to end their fifth birthday celebrations – with a range of other great promotions currently running.

The tournament is set to be loaded with Team Full Tilt members including WSOP bracelet winners Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson and Phil Ivey. This will be a rare opportunity for players on a limited budget to bust some notable pros, while making history at the same time.

The tourney is unbeatable value at just US$5 buy-in with US$250,000 guaranteed. Even with the massive field, the tournament will most likely hit overlay turf.

Team Full Tilt Pro Howard Lederer was quick to acknowledge the opportunity this tournament provides for the average low buy-in tournament grinder.

"By extending the limits of what is possible in online poker tournaments, Full Tilt Poker will allow players to compete for a big payout without the big buy-in,” said Lederer.

Attempting to stage a tournament of this size would be impossible in the live poker world, but online it’s possible to put on an affordable event, in a time effective manner. The current record for the largest “live” poker tournament was set at the 2006 WSOP Main Event with 8,772 players.

Full Tilt Poker will need to attract nearly four times that number if the record breaker is to live up to its name and secure the official Guinness World Record. If successful, this tournament will establish Full Tilt Poker as both a World Record holder and a world leader in online gaming technology.
