2009 Aussie Millions Event 1 Set To Smash Guarantee!
Posted at 10:39 2009-01-10
Day 1a of Event 1 has completed with organisers breathing a sigh of relief with a huge field of 342 hitting the Crown Poker Room for Event #1: $1,100 No Limit Hold’em. With all the negative talk of global economic downturn affecting turnouts to big poker events, many were asking whether there would be an overlay for tournaments with guaranteed minimum prize pools or if guarantees will be scrapped all together. Such a strong turn out means the $500,000 guarantee for this event will be smashed much to the delight of both organizers and players alike.
Notable poker players in today’s field included Annette Obrestad, Sam Khouiss, Mel Judah, Michael Vartan, Shane Dye, Emad Tahtouh, Harry Demetriou, David Saab, Peter Aristidou, Leo Boxell, Michael "Sticky" Guttman, Jamie Pickering, Antonio Casale, Tony Dunst, Billy “The Croc” Argyros, Tony Hachem, and PokerNetwork Player of the Year Sam Youssef. Australian Rules footballers Brendan Fevola and Luke Hodge also showed that poker extends across all sports and cultures as they joined the starters list.
With a start bank of only 5,000 chips and blinds at 40 minutes, players were forced to be a lot more active since the structure is much faster than the larger buy-in events. As such the tournament moved quite quickly and the eliminations came thick and fast with big name players like Tony Dunst, Tony Hachem, Billy “The Croc” Argyros, Sam Youssef all hitting the cash games early.
54 players survived day 1a with notable survivors including Jamie Pickering, Graeme Putt, Michael Chrisanthoploulos, Emad Tahtouh, Sam Khouiss and David Saab, along with chip leaders David Griffiths, Christian Heich and Rodney Snider. Day 1b promises to have even more runners than day1a since it is a Saturday and many players who work Monday to Friday have already registered to play. As more international players arrive, the poker is still just heating up as we head into day two of Australia’s hottest weeks of poker.
