Hachem, Benton and Argyros in Contention in Darwin

Posted at 00:58 2010-10-29

Day 2 of the PokerStars.net ANZPT Darwin Main Event saw 72 players return to the SKYCITY Casino in Darwin to battle it out for another five levels to reach the final four tables.

Andrew Hinrichsen was the chip leader but he crashed out with set over set, while fellow PokerNetwork’s Ricky Kroesen, Daniel Neilson and Matthew Pearson were also unable to survive the day.

The big story was the battle in four for the ANZPT Player of the Year title but that race was blown wide open when John Maklouf and Andrew Scarf, currently number one and two on the rankings, were both eliminated from the tournament.

This left Team PokerStars Pro Tony Hachem and Aaron Benton in prime position to make a tilt at the title when play resumes tomorrow.

Hachem once again bided his time all day until a late flurry of activity saw him accumulate some much needed chips. Hachem was able to fold pocket kings preflop in a controversial hand against Brotha D who flashed pocket aces, before the same scenario in reverse saw Hachem’s aces eliminate an opponent’s pocket kings to complete the day as 32 players remained.

Hachem will need to reach 8th to be guaranteed back-to-back ANZPT POTY titles, while a cash result might be enough if Benton doesn’t reach the money. While Benton can still claim the honour if Hachem stumbles.

The calculators will be working overdrive tonight as the permutations are discussed, but it should make for a thrilling finale.

Day 2 Top 10 Chip Counts
Byron Henderson – 143,800
Mark Chin - 139,400
Anthony Flanagan - 111,300
Tim English - 107,700
Jie Gao - 101,300
Nicholas Ergos - 87,900
Bruno Portaro - 83,900
Ben Savage - 82,400
Joel Feldman - 77,100
George Manolas - 67,700

The 32 players will return to the SKYCITY Darwin Casino on Day 3 at 12:30pm local time as they play it down until we reach our final table of nine. Can Tony Hachem or Aaron Benton reach the money and the points to claim the ANZPT Player of the Year honours?
