Players from all around the country headed north to the “Top End” as Darwin hosted a major poker tournament for the very first time as the PokerStars.net ANZPT rolled into town. For the next week the SKYCITY Casino in Darwin will host the best poker in the land as Season 2 of the ANZPT comes to a thrilling finale.
Day 1a saw 36 players take to the felt with just ten eliminations during the five levels of play. Tim English and Ricky Kroesen were prominent throughout the day, while Tom Grigg and Sean Dunwoodie were notable eliminations. However it was fellow young gun Andy Hinrichsen who claimed the end of day chip lead. Hinrichsen had a starting table featuring Michael O’Grady and APPT Auckland champ Brotha D, but when Hinrichsen’s pocket queens held against an opponent’s pocket jacks, he soared into the chip lead.
He was challenged briefly by PokerNetwork’s own Luke Edwards, who was in a great spot to grab a massive stack as he had his opponent, SKYCITY Adelaide Casino qualifier Trevor Potts drawing to just one out. The two had collided on a queen high flop, with Edwards’ pocket kings in command against Potts’ king-queen. With one queen already in the muck, the dealer revealed the black lady on the river to give Potts the remarkable double up. Edwards took the bad beat well, and will head into day two with a solid stack.
Hinrichsen claimed the chip lead ahead of Ricky Kroesen and Tim English. The locals made up over half of the players in the flight with Tec Lay and Terry Wallis progressing through with good stacks.
