WA LEADS THE WAY IN GENEROSITY

Thanks to the kindness of West Australians and their willingness to dig deep for a worthy cause, Radio Lollipop is thrilled to announce that a total of $62,100.42 was raised on Uniform Free Day (UFD), held on the 19th March this year.

UFD is Radio Lollipop’s major annual fundraising event and has taken place every year for the past 11 years. Transperth has supported UFD since its conception, encouraging staff and drivers to dress up in fancy dress costume and collect donations.

Proof of West Australians’ generosity of spirit was a $5000 donation made by former Radio Lollipop Chairman Max Veenhuyzen who won more than $160000 in an online poker tournament earlier this year.

Mr Veenhuyzen, the first Australian to have won the prestigious PokerStars Sunday Million weekly event, said that it was a pleasure to be able to lend a helping hand.

“I’ve seen first-hand all the magic that Radio Lollipop brings into the lives of people so making the decision to share part of my windfall wasn’t much of a decision at all,” Mr Veenhuyzen said.

“At the end of the day, I’m just some guy that won some money playing cards – what I did pales in comparison to what the brave kids, their families and volunteers and staff at Princess Margaret Hospital and other children’s hospitals around the world go through every day.”

Radio Lollipop Charity Coordinator Melissa Sparta-Dawes said she was amazed by the generosity of Western Australians, particularly during these financially challenging times.

“We live busy lives and while not everyone can donate their time, it is truly inspiring how willing we are as a state to reach into our own pockets – whether it’s $5,000 or 50 cents, it all makes a difference,” she said.

“We have wonderful volunteers but they could not provide the level of care without the huge hearts of the public and the amazing support of Transperth.

“Words could never express the gratitude that Radio Lollipop has for Transperth and all their support over the years.”

Transperth Executive Director Mark Burgess said Radio Lollipop Uniform Day was a fantastic cause that helped bring smiles and laughter to kids in hospital at a time when they needed it most.

“This colourful fundraising drive boots Radio Lollipop’s funds by around $50,000 each year and is the charity’s main source of revenue,” he said.

The money raised will go towards maintaining and developing the radio studio and station programs including keeping Radio Lollipop’s CD library up to date so listeners’ requests for the latest music can be met.

Radio Lollipop also provides colouring-in, arts and crafts, prizes and around 15,000 packets of pencils each year and funds raised from this year’s Uniform Free Day are helping the organisation towards its goal of being able to reach every child in WA.
