Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series 5 Main Event Kicks Off

Posted at 08:15 2010-12-03

The penultimate tournament series for Australia in 2010 has hit its marquee event with Day 1a of the Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series $550 Main Event getting underway yesterday.

The fifth instalment of the highly popular and successful JHDSS saw 203 players waltz into the Crown Poker Room at 7:10pm to take part in an event that is expecting to draw a $300,000 prizepool – even with the APPT Sydney and its preliminary events in full swing.

A 20,000-chip starting bank and forty-minute levels pleased the majority of those partaking, but as normal, there were a few complaining of the turbo-like structure not fitting the motto of this being a deep-stacked tournament!

There will always be haters, but of those that took to the felt, it was a predominately Victorian field with high stakes players Billy Jordanou, Bruno Portaro, Joe Cabret, Mario Doria and Jim Sachinidis mixing it up with tournament regulars Dennis Huntly, Steve Topakas, Karib Karib, Brian Hull, Michael Pedley and Ben Savage.

A handful of youngsters such as Kaz Jomeen, Trung Tran, Tom Wing, David Zhou and Luke Edwards were headlined by a trio of brothers – that of the Cohens – as Julian, Hugh and the lesser-known Toby, took to Day 1a. Unfortunately of all the above named players, only Toby Cohen would survive as both his brothers and the highly-skilled previously-mentioned players all found their way on the rail.

After falling ill at the recent APPT Cebu event, Joe Hachem made an appearance in the tournament series named in his honour, but after having a gutshot hit on him, Hachem’s day would end when his {Js}{Jc} came undone against an opponent’s {7h}{7c} after all the money went in on the river on a {3c}{7d}{4s}{Th}{5c} board.

With ten levels in the bag, only sixty-two players would remain as Ioannis Makris sat atop with an impressive 172,800. Trailing him include Crown tournament regulars Andrew Topakas (134,300), Cliff Lee (105,100) and Koun Chhoy (101,900) as the top ten chip counts round out as follows:

Top Ten Chip Counts

Ioannis Makris – 172,800 in chips
Paul Bennett – 149,300
Andrew Topakas – 134,300
Ricki Vedhara – 134,100
Phillip Iglesias – 123,800
Sam Georges – 118,500
Matthew McMahon – 115,700
Cale Callaway – 113,800
David Ross – 109,000
Hyuhjin Jung – 108,400

For all those players that busted today, they have the option to repechage tomorrow where another expected 200-plus field is set to hit the Crown Poker Room from 12:10pm. PokerNetwork will again be on hand to provide all the live updates as we begin the ascent to crowning the fifth Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series Main Event Champion.
