A total of 153 players decided to exchange $550, over three starting days, for the chance to become a 2012 SKYCITY Deep Stack Series champion which created a prize pool of $76,500. From those 153 players 78 made it through to Day 2 and of those only 16 made it into the money, a min-cash being worth $770.
The first player to collect their prize money was Leilani Vaughn and she was followed the rail by Nick Hood, John Harman, Mike Tyler, Lean King, Anthony Corin and Brandon Naidu.
Naidu's elimination saw the nine-handed final table set and the organisers decided to roll back the clock so to improve on what was already a fantastic blind structure. Despite the extra room to manoeuvre Sam Ruha, Chao Pang, Lee Yeung and Paul Reid could not quite go the distance.
From there the eliminations came in thick and fast and when Damon Smith, Eric Chang and Cole Swannack were sent to the rail it was up to Li and his fellow Auckland local Matt Carter to battle it out one-on-one for the title. The heads-up battle did not take long at all to complete and the final hand saw Carter all-in holding against the of Li but by the river Li had completed a straight and that was more than enough to beat the ace-high of his opponent and the title was his.
