Day 1c of the PokerStars.net ANZPT Queenstown Main Event saw 33 fresh-faced players take to the felt for their shot at Kiwi fame and fortune. While only four tables were in action, they were jam-packed with talented players from the local regions, with a sprinkling of international visitors.
Highlighting the field were PokerStars Team Australia pros Celina Lin and Eric Assadourian, and they were joined by Dennis Huntly, Bruno Portaro, James Honeybone, Daniel Botta, Mark Iskander, Tian Shou, Josh Egan, and ANZPT Melbourne champ Chris Levick.
Bruno Portaro was an early casualty after losing a race with pocket sevens against the ace-king of nemesis Mark Iskander, while the ANZPT points leaderboard was thrown wide open after the shock elimination of overall leader Chris Levick. After getting his chips in as a prohibitive favourite with pocket queens against Hugh Cohen’s pocket jacks, Levick watch on in horror to see the board run out 4-8-7-9-T.
Another high profile elimination was Eric Assadourian. The Team PokerStars Australia pro had enjoyed some success on these shores in the past, but today wasn’t his day and he was eliminated when his straight and flush draws failed to deliver against Josh Egan’s set.
Australian qualifier Andrew Hinrichsen bagged up the chip lead with 65,475, with Mark Iskander, Josh Egan and James Honeybone is good shape, while Celina Lin and Dennis Huntly scraped through amongst the 21 survivors on the short stacks.
The top ten chips counts at the end of the day were as follows:
Andrew Hinrichsen - 65,475
Mark Iskander - 49,725
Julian Cohen - 45,875
Mark Walker - 45,350
Ville Nurmi - 44,325
Josh Egan - 42,975
Erich Stadler - 40,050
Glenn Maiden - 38,775
James Honeybone - 29,700
Hugh Cohen - 28,075
With a celebrity event entertaining the locals in the evening, a capacity field is expected to the SKYCITY Casino tomorrow for fourth and final opening flight of the ANZPT Queenstown Main Event.
