Maklouf Leads Darwin Day 1c

The third and final flight of the PokerStars.net ANZPT Darwin Main Event saw 33 players take to the felt to bring the total number of players to a nice, round figure of 100. It looked like registration was going to be stuck on 99, but a last minute dash to the bank by SKYCITY Darwin regular Tony Kanochkin saw the total tick over to the century. This created a prize pool of $200,000 which is a record for tournament poker in the top end.

Kanochkin joined the likes of Billy “The Croc” Argyros, who felt more than comfortable in crocodile country, Bruno Portaro, Mishel Anunu, Brad Bower, Joel Feldman, Brian Hull, Ben Savage, Leo Boxell and Chris Levick.

However the talk of town was the intense battle for the ANZPT Player of the Year title. After an early table break, Andrew Scarf and John Maklouf were seated directly next to each other so were able to keep a close eye on each other’s progress.

While Scarf couldn’t get much going, Maklouf caught some cards and got paid off to end the day with the chip lead. Serge Mazza, Billy “The Croc” Argyros and Bruno Portaro also ended the day well placed. Portaro’s ride was a rocky one, after he was crippled in the first levels of the day when his own full house was counterfeited by Macau PokerStars qualifier Roy Wan. After copping an equally devastating blow to be eliminated from the Melbourne event, Portaro will be hoping his luck turns around in the top end.

Day 1c Top 10 Counts John Maklouf – 49,350
Serge Mazza – 46,750
Billy Argyros – 46,400
Alexandros Krepapas – 35,675
Morry Edelstein – 33,475
Bruno Portaro – 32,350
Josh Onas – 29,900
Danny Andrews – 25,600
Joel Feldman – 25,050
Sam Rotar – 24,925
Justin Wilson – 24,600

24 players make it through the day and will join the survivors of Day 1a and 1b as the final 72 players come together in the SKYCITY Darwin Casino for the first time.

Day 2 will commence a 12:30pm local time with another five levels of play expected.
