Martin Nilsson has won the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Asian Series Goa 2012 Main Event; bagging himself the title and INR1,942,000 in the process. The event was held at the Casino Royale in Goa, India and commanded an Indian Rupee (INR) 50,000 buy-in, which translates to around $910 Australian Dollars. The Main Event was part of a larger festival that had 11-events including an INR150,000 high roller tournament.
Numbers were slightly down on the 2011 APT Goa which attracted 158 entries and featured poker superstar Nam Le on the final table, but the organisers can still mark this event down as a success in a fledgling poker market
Day 1a attracted 64 entries, with 21 surviving the first day. Varun Vimal was the early chip leader, with the eventual winner Nilsson hot on his heels in second place. As is the case with all APT Main Events, anyone who busted during the first flight could re-enter for Day 1b and there were some re-entries amongst the 67 players who bought in for the second starting flight. By the time play came to a end on Day 1b 27 players had survived and it was Rishabh Jhunjhunwala who led the pack, whilst the APT Goa 2011 runner-up Sameer Rattonsey found himself second in chips. The combined field of 131 entries created a prize pool of INR 5,895,000 million or AUD$107,000.
On Day 2 the 48 surviving players from Day 1a and 1b were whittled down to the nine-handed final table. Nilsson, born in Sri Lanka but raised in Sweden, finished the day as the overall chip leader but he was followed closely by the aforementioned Rattonsey; who reached the final table back in 2011. On the final table, Rattonsey eventually finished in fifth place for INR 354,000 but it was the Nilsson, who now lives in China, who took it down for INR1,942,000 or a very healthy $35,645 after a dominant performance throughout.
Next up on the APT schedule is APT Macau which will run from July 25th to the 31st. The event will be held at the StarWorld Hotel and Casino and the Main Event will feature a HK$25,000 buy-in ($3,300).
