Michael Guzzardi Leads After Day 1a of Aussie Millions Event #1

The 2013 Aussie Millions got under way yesterday at the Crown Casino, Melbourne when the first of 26 events kicked off in spectacular style. The first of three starting flights from Event #1, the $1,100 No Limit Hold’em Repechage saw 323 registrations, putting the tournament on course to beat the attendance figure of the 2012 event.
Although 323 players started only 33 of them managed to navigate their way through the minefield that is a Day 1 in a $1,100 event. One man who certainly made his way through to Day 2 is Melbourne’s Michael Guzzardi, the overnight chip leader.
Guzzardi, referred to as “The Big Sicko” by the Crown Poker team, ended the night with a 252,600 chips and he will now fancy his chances of going all the way in this tournament. Guzzardi has over $300,000 in live tournament winnings, most of them coming from Australian-based tournaments. His biggest recent cash tops the scales at $112,000 that he was awarded for finishing third in the ANZPT Melbourne Main Event in October 2012. Should Guzzardi continue to build on his amazing start, he stands a good chance of walking away from the Crown Poker Room as a champion.
The man who ended Day 1a in second place was Ryan Smith and his 217,500 chips. He and Guzzardi will be joined on Day 2 by the likes of former European Poker Tour Prague champion Martin Finger (162,900); former World Series of Poker Main Event winner Joe Hachem (133,900); Liam O’Rourke (60,800); Melanie Weisner (55,800) and Minh Nguyen (50,300).
A number of well-known faces failed to make it through to Day 2 at the first attempt, Jackie Glazier and Billy “The Croc” Argyros just two of those established figures. British pro and former EPT San Remo champion Rupert Elder had to endure a torrid time at the Crown Poker Room felt, busting out twice on Day 1a! He will, however, re-enter again today.
