It would take an icy heart not to be moved by the soul destroying stories and images of devastation coming out of Haiti after it was rocked by a massive earthquake last week. Sometimes it takes tragedy like the one in Haiti for the true virtue in human kind to be seen.
The poker community is no exception and many of the big names in the industry have joined athletes, movie stars, and major business players in helping to raise funds and awareness for the plight of one of the poorest nations in the world.
Some big names have come out in support of the tiny island nation including Tiger Woods, Wyclef Jean, Shannon Elizabeth, and the NFL’s Chad Ochocinco among many others.
It’s not hard to see why if you’ve seen the images on either the local news or the much more extended coverage on the American news channels. The devastation is horrific and things will only get worse unless funds can be directed appropriately to ensure that an already over-worked sub-standard hospital system can cope with an overload of casualties, and that a re-building effort can get underway so that Haiti’s problems are not further compounded by unemployment, homelessness and lawlessness.
Online site Bodog led by founder Calvin Ayre and pros Evelyn Ng and David Williams have got the assistance well underway from the poker industry. Ayre has made an initial donation of £10,000 to U.K.-based Oxfam and has promised to match any further donations from the poker community up to $1 million.
Of course you can also join the efforts to help Haiti recover. Much like they did last year with the Victorian bushfires, PokerStars have launched an easy way to donate to the relief efforts through the PokerStars software. Simply transfer any amount you wish to the account “Haiti Fund” and PokerStars will match every dollar that is donated. All funds raised will go directly to the Red Cross.
This is your opportunity to join some of the bigger names in poker including PokerStars Pros Gavin Griffin and John Duthie in giving to a great cause and making a difference to the wider world. Sometimes it’s too easy to take for granted the plentiful supply of basic conveniences that we have in a first world nation. A small proportion of the money that you gamble with each day, could help to save people’s lives in Haiti.
